①空欄前後の論理:but / however は逆接、therefore は結果、if は条件、in order to は目的です。

Subject: Updated Volunteer Workshop Schedule

Dear Students,

Thank you for volunteering at our reading workshop next Saturday. We expect thirty children from local elementary schools. They will work in groups of five, with two student volunteers helping each group.

In the first session, volunteers will read short stories aloud and ask questions about the characters. Please speak clearly, but you do not need to memorize every sentence.

After lunch, the children will draw a picture about their favorite part of a story. The organizers will supply colored pencils and paper. Volunteers should bring a notebook and a water bottle. Lunch will be provided for volunteers; children should bring their own.

The workshop will finish at 2:30 p.m. If you have a food allergy, contact us by Wednesday. If you cannot come, tell us by Thursday evening so another volunteer can take your place.

We will send the final timetable by email on Friday.

A Study of Sound in Study Rooms

A school science club wanted to see whether a quieter room could help students solve reading questions more accurately. The group invited thirty-six volunteers. Half completed a short reading task in a quiet room, while the others used a room where soft background music was playing.

Both groups had fifteen minutes. In the quiet room, eleven students answered at least eight of ten questions correctly. In the music room, nine students reached the same level.

Some club members believed that this proved music always reduced reading scores. Their teacher asked them to be more careful. The participants had different reading abilities before the test, and the two groups had not been chosen randomly.

The teacher also pointed out that some students might concentrate better with music than others. The group had measured only one short task, not the students’ performance over a long period.

For the next study, students planned to try both conditions with the same participants on different days. They would also ask each person about their normal study environment. The group wanted to explain what the data suggested without claiming more than the experiment could show.

Q31. How many students joined the study? A. Thirty / B. Thirty-two / C. Thirty-six / D. Forty

Q32. What was different between the two rooms? A. Background music / B. The number of desks / C. The language of the test / D. The length of the task

Q33. How much time did each group have? A. Ten minutes / B. Twenty minutes / C. Thirty minutes / D. Fifteen minutes

Q34. How many students in the quiet room got at least eight correct? A. Nine / B. Eleven / C. Eighteen / D. Thirty-six

Q35. How many in the music room reached the same level? A. Nine / B. Eleven / C. Thirteen / D. Fifteen

Q36. What was the teacher concerned about? A. The tests had no questions / B. All students were the same age / C. Groups had different prior abilities and were not randomized / D. There was no music

Q37. Could the study prove music always hurts reading scores? A. Yes, for all learners / B. Yes, in every school / C. Only for students who like music / D. No, the evidence was too limited

Q38. What might be true for some students? A. They never read books / B. They concentrate better with music / C. They cannot hear music / D. They always score the same

Q39. What will the next study change? A. Use no reading tasks / B. Include only one room / C. Let the same students try both settings on different days / D. Stop measuring scores

Q40. What other information will be collected? A. Normal study environments / B. Favorite sports teams / C. Family incomes / D. Types of shoes
