instead・instead of・rather than・would ratherの違い｜無料40問【全解説】

例えばI would rather to stay home.は不適切で、I would rather stay home.と書きます。一方I would prefer to stay home.は自然な形です。またrather thanとinstead ofは文脈によりどちらも使える場合があるため、無理に二者択一の正答を作りません。語句の後ろに何が続くか、主語は同じか、単なる代替か好みの表明かを判断してください。

insteadとinstead ofは一語違いではなく品詞が違う

The shop was closed, so we went home instead.は文末で副詞insteadが単独で機能しています。一方We went home instead of waiting.ではinstead ofという前置詞句にwaitingという動名詞が続きます。instead ofだけを文末に置いてしまう誤りを避け、次の名詞・動名詞があるかを見てください。

instead of doing と rather than doingは両方自然な場合がある

We walked instead of taking a bus.もWe walked rather than taking a bus.も意味が近く、文脈次第で自然です。前者は置換・代替、後者は2つの選択肢の比較に焦点があります。正誤の根拠が文法的に1つへ定まらないときは、両方正しい可能性を残すのが適切です。

would ratherとwould preferは動詞の形が違う

I would rather go by train.とI would prefer to go by train.はどちらも「電車で行く方がよい」という意味です。しかしwould ratherの後はtoなしのgo、would preferの後はto go。I would rather to goとI would prefer goは学校英語の基本形として不適切です。

would rather＋別の主語は過去形を使うことがある

I would rather you stayed here.は「あなたにはここにいてほしい」という現在・未来の希望です。この場合、別の主語youに続く動詞は過去形stayedとなる構造が一般的です。I would rather stay here.のように自分の行動を選ぶ構文とは区別します。まずは同じ主語ならwould rather＋原形を確実にしましょう。

preferの比較：thanではなくtoを使う形

I prefer English to mathematics.はprefer A to Bという形です。またI prefer reading to watching videos.のように動名詞同士を比較できます。would ratherならI would rather read than watch videos.という別の構造になります。同じ日本語でも動詞によって前置詞やtoの有無を変えます。
