英検準2級プラスの仕事・買い物・環境の長文では、supply(供給)・demand(需要)・shortage(不足)・surplus(余剰)を区別すると、数量や原因を正確に読めます。

the supply of books。
high demand for a workshop。
  • in stock / out of stock:在庫あり/品切れ。

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A school bookshop received requests for sixty English workbooks before the new term. The supplier could deliver only forty-five copies on Monday because another shipment was delayed. The shop therefore had a shortage of fifteen copies relative to the sixty confirmed requests. Staff reserved the forty-five available books for the first forty-five students in the confirmed order list. The remaining fifteen students were told that their copies would be supplied after a restock on Thursday. A parent assumed that the school had ordered only forty-five copies. The manager explained that demand was sixty, but the first delivery was forty-five. A second parent thought that the shortage meant the bookshop had no books at all. Staff pointed out that some copies were already in stock. On Thursday the missing fifteen books arrived, and the shop informed the waiting students. The school recorded the original demand, first supply and later delivery as different figures.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A public library offered a free umbrella-lending service. It owned forty umbrellas that could be lent to visitors under its rules. On a rainy Monday, fifty visitors wanted to borrow an umbrella at about the same time. Even if every umbrella was available, the library could meet only forty of those requests immediately, leaving a shortage of ten relative to the requests. Staff created a waiting list and asked borrowers to return umbrellas at the agreed time. On a sunny Tuesday, only twelve visitors wanted umbrellas. The library still had forty umbrellas in its inventory, but some were temporarily out on loan, so the number immediately available might have been smaller. The librarian explained that a surplus cannot be calculated from total inventory alone without knowing how many items are actually available. In a simplified comparison assuming all forty were available on Tuesday, there would be twenty-eight more umbrellas than the twelve requests. The library planned to track loans and actual availability more carefully.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A school festival committee estimated that eighty visitors would buy a particular snack. To avoid running out, it prepared one hundred portions. On the festival day, seventy-five portions were sold and five were given to volunteers under the committee’s stated rules. Twenty portions remained unused at closing time. The organizer called these twenty an unsold surplus, not a confirmed amount of wasted food. Staff checked how the remaining food had been stored before deciding what could be safely used or disposed of according to the rules. Some students argued that preparing more portions than the original estimate had automatically caused twenty portions to be wasted. The teacher explained that unsold stock and food waste are different concepts and that the final outcome had not yet been recorded. The committee also noted that its demand estimate of eighty was different from actual sales of seventy-five. For the next festival, it planned to use past sales records rather than rely only on guesses.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A school energy club made a simplified chart of electricity demand and supply during an afternoon. Between noon and 1 p.m., the building needed four hundred units of electricity while its solar panels generated four hundred fifty units. Under the simplified assumption that all generation could be used, the supply exceeded demand by fifty units. Between 6 and 7 p.m., however, electricity demand was five hundred units and solar output was only twenty units. The club explained that electricity needs to be supplied from other sources or previously stored energy when local generation is insufficient. It did not say that the fifty-unit midday surplus could automatically cover the entire evening gap, because storage capacity and losses had not been examined. A student claimed that producing more electricity at noon proved that the school could operate without the grid all day. The teacher corrected this, explaining that supply and demand change over time. The figures were invented for learning and did not describe a real school’s electrical system.

FAQ

shortageとout of stockは同じですか?
