独自長文1|修理カフェの試行
At Northgate School, students noticed that small electronic items were often thrown away even when they could be repaired. A science teacher suggested a repair café where volunteers could fix simple problems. The school tried this idea for two afternoons. Twenty-five students brought broken items, and twelve items were repaired successfully. However, volunteers did not repair devices with serious battery problems because of safety concerns. The school is considering monthly sessions, but it needs more volunteers and family feedback before deciding. Students said they had learned that repairs could reduce waste, although buying new items is sometimes necessary.

I think schools should teach students basic repair skills. First, students may learn to use products carefully, which could reduce waste. Second, simple repair projects can develop patience and problem-solving skills. For example, students could learn to fix a loose button or a damaged pencil case. However, dangerous electrical repairs should always be left to trained adults.

独自長文2|歩きやすい地域地図
In Maple Town, older residents sometimes had trouble finding safe walking routes to the shopping area. High school students proposed making a map that showed benches, crossings, and places to rest. They walked along five routes and interviewed residents about difficult locations. Their first map identified two crossings that needed clearer signs. The town office agreed to check the crossings but did not promise road changes. Some residents requested information about public toilets, so the students plan to revise the map next month. The project helped students understand how small details can affect people’s daily travel.

I think students should join community projects. First, they can understand problems that are not always discussed in classrooms. Second, working with local residents can improve communication skills. For example, students could interview older people about safe walking routes and suggest clearer signs. These activities may help young people develop a stronger sense of responsibility for their towns.

独自長文3|給食の食品ロス
At Bayview School, teachers noticed that many students left vegetables on their plates. Instead of changing the menu immediately, they asked students why they did not finish certain dishes. Some students said portions were too large, while others disliked unfamiliar ingredients. The school then offered smaller portions as an option for three weeks. Staff measured leftover food, and the total decreased during the trial. However, the school did not compare the nutritional value of different meals. Teachers plan to collect more feedback before choosing which changes to keep. They also want students to learn why a balanced diet matters.

I think students should be allowed to choose smaller portions at school. First, this may reduce food waste because students can take an amount they expect to finish. Second, students may be more willing to try unfamiliar foods in small amounts. However, schools should still provide balanced meals and allow students to ask for more when necessary.

独自長文4|夜間の天体観測
A public science center in Cedar City wanted to attract more teenagers. Staff organized three free evening events where visitors could observe the moon through telescopes. Participants had to reserve places online. On the first evening, the sky was cloudy, so staff gave an indoor talk instead. During the other two evenings, visitors used telescopes outside. Some participants later requested weekend sessions, but the center has not decided whether to offer them. Staff explained that weekend events would require more volunteers and equipment. They will review these requests after checking the budget for the next season.

I think science centers should offer more evening programs for teenagers. First, students can explore subjects such as astronomy after school. Second, observing real objects may make science more interesting than reading about them alone. For example, telescope events could help students understand the moon. However, centers should consider staffing needs and equipment costs before adding more events.
