結論｜increase・rise・raise・grow の使い分け
- increase：人数・量・料金などが増える、またはそれらを増やす。自動詞・他動詞の両方。Sales increased. / They increased the fee.
- rise：水位・気温・価格などが上がる。基本的に自動詞。変化形は rise–rose–risen。The water level rose.
- raise：手・料金・意識などを上げる、募金する。目的語を取る他動詞。変化形は raise–raised–raised。raise your hand / raise money
- grow：育つ・成長する、作物を栽培する、数量が増える。変化形は grow–grew–grown。Plants grow. / We grow tomatoes.
注意：Prices rose. と Prices increased. はどちらも自然です。「increase＝自動詞にできない」と覚えるのは誤りです。また grow は植物だけでなく人口や市場の成長にも使えます。単語を機械的に一対一対応させず、文型と文脈で見分けましょう。
英検準2級プラスとの関係

解けなかった問題の復習法
- 最初に動詞の右側を確認。目的語があるなら raise / increase / grow の他動詞用法を検討する。
- rise / rose / risen と raise / raised / raised を3回ずつ声に出して比較する。
- 数字が登場する長文では「以前の値・現在の値・増減の原因」をそれぞれ一行に記録する。
- 翌日と3日後に誤答だけを再テストし、答えの根拠となる英文を音読する。
よくある質問
Q. increase と rise は同じ意味ですか？
数値や料金が「上がる」意味では重なる場合があります。一方、increase は他動詞にもなり、rise は基本的に自動詞です。
Q. raise と rise はどう見分けますか？
Raise your hand. は目的語があります。The sun rises. は主語そのものが上がります。動詞の直後に何があるかを確認してください。
