英検準2級プラスの天気・学校・地域社会の説明文では、forecast(予報)・prediction(予測)・estimate(概算・推定)・projection(前提に基づく将来試算)を、すでに確認された事実と混同しないことが大切です。

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A school planned an outdoor science exhibition for Saturday. On Thursday morning, the local weather forecast gave a 60 percent chance of rain during the afternoon. Some students read this as a promise that it would rain throughout the day. The teacher explained that a probability is not a guarantee of what will happen at one particular place and time. The club prepared a backup plan to move sensitive equipment into the gym if conditions became unsuitable. On Friday, the updated forecast lowered the chance of afternoon rain to 30 percent. The school still kept the backup plan, because the weather could change. On Saturday, it rained briefly in the morning, but the afternoon exhibition was held outdoors. The club wrote a report separating Thursday’s forecast, Friday’s forecast and the actual weather. It avoided claiming that either forecast had been a definite statement of the day’s result. Students were asked to understand probability as information for planning rather than a promise.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A public library was preparing a talk about local history. A week before the event, seventy-five people had registered, and the room had a capacity of one hundred. Based on the number of registrations and past attendance patterns, the organizer estimated that about sixty-five people might attend. A volunteer predicted that everyone who had registered would arrive, but the librarian explained that the volunteer’s prediction was not a confirmed count. On the event day, sixty-eight people checked in. The actual attendance was three higher than the organizer’s estimate and seven fewer than the number registered. The library reported all three figures separately: seventy-five registrations, an estimate of sixty-five attendees and actual attendance of sixty-eight. The librarian said that the estimate had helped staff prepare chairs and printed guides, even though it was not exact. For the next event, the library planned to compare its estimates with actual attendance and improve the planning process.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A school used an average of two hundred units of electricity during a particular monthly reporting period. The student council considered two possible plans for reducing future electricity use. In Scenario A, it assumed that the school would reduce use by ten percent. The projection under this assumption was one hundred eighty units. In Scenario B, it assumed a twenty percent reduction, producing a projection of one hundred sixty units. The council did not claim that either figure had already been achieved. It also did not promise that the two reductions would definitely happen, because actual results depended on how people used equipment and on other conditions. Students planned to explain both scenarios to teachers and collect practical suggestions. They would compare future meter readings with these projections after the next reporting period. The report emphasized that a projection is calculated from assumptions, whereas an actual result requires measurement after the activity.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A small museum considered advertising its new science exhibition to more local schools. Without an extra campaign, the staff estimated that ninety visitors might come during opening weekend. If the museum ran a new advertisement, the planning team projected one hundred twenty visitors, assuming that the message reached enough families. The director called this a conditional projection, not an advance count of actual visitors. The campaign was launched and one hundred five people visited during the weekend. That was fifteen more than the original estimate but fifteen fewer than the advertising projection. One staff member wrote that the campaign had definitely caused all fifteen additional visitors. The director said that the available numbers alone did not prove that explanation. Other factors, such as weather and school schedules, might also have affected attendance. The museum planned to interview visitors about how they learned of the exhibition. Its final report included the initial estimate, campaign projection and actual attendance as three separate figures.
