英検準2級プラスの学校・科学・地域社会の長文では、survey(アンケート調査)・interview(聞き取り)・observation(観察)・experiment(実験)の違いと、調査人数・回答率・結論の範囲を理解すると内容一致に強くなります。

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A junior high school wanted to learn which kind of reading material students preferred. The student council sent a voluntary online survey to 200 students. Eighty students responded. Of those respondents, 48 preferred digital reading materials, 24 preferred printed books, and eight had no preference. The council reported these numbers rather than claiming that 60 percent of all 200 students preferred digital materials. The teacher explained that 48 out of 80 is 60 percent of respondents, but only 80 of the 200 invited students had completed the survey. Some students who rarely used school email may have been less likely to respond. The council therefore described its findings as the views of participants, not a complete picture of every student. It also interviewed six volunteers to understand why some people liked reading on screens. The interviews provided explanations and examples, but they could not replace the missing 120 survey responses. The school planned to compare different sources before making changes to its library.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A science museum wanted to improve signs near an interactive display. Researchers observed visitors for two afternoons, recording whether people stopped at the display and which direction they walked afterward. They did not ask people to change their routes during the observation. In total, 120 visitors passed the display, and 72 stopped for at least one minute. The team then interviewed twelve volunteers who agreed to discuss the signs. Several interviewees said that a larger arrow might make the correct route clearer. The museum could not conclude from those comments alone that all visitors had difficulty reading the sign. A staff member suggested testing two new designs under similar conditions. The director agreed that an experiment could help compare the designs, but no such experiment had yet been carried out. The report separated observed behavior, comments from interviews, and the possible explanation proposed by staff. It recommended further testing before the museum bought new signs for the entire building.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

A community group wanted to know whether residents supported adding more trees to a local park. It posted an online questionnaire on its social-media page for one week. Fifty people filled it in, and 40 supported the idea. The group initially considered writing that 80 percent of all town residents wanted new trees. However, a volunteer pointed out that the fifty respondents had chosen to answer after seeing the group’s page. Residents who did not follow the page might have different views. The group changed the report to say that 80 percent of its survey respondents supported the plan. It then arranged short interviews with ten residents from different neighborhoods to learn more about their reasons and concerns. The interviews suggested that some residents worried about maintenance costs and access to walking paths. The group had not yet measured those costs or tested how new trees would affect the paths. It planned to collect further information before making a final recommendation to the town office.

Reading passage(慶英会オリジナル)

An English teacher wanted to compare two ways of reviewing vocabulary. Forty volunteers joined a two-week classroom study. The students were divided into two groups of twenty. Both groups studied the same words for the same number of minutes, but one group reviewed with paper cards and the other used a digital quiz. The teacher recorded quiz results before and after the study and collected comments through a questionnaire. At the end, the digital-quiz group improved its average score by six points, while the paper-card group improved by four points. The teacher did not say that digital study was always better for every student, because the groups were small and volunteers had chosen to participate. An interview with eight students helped the teacher understand their experiences but did not change the numerical scores. The school planned to repeat the study with more participants and examine whether the groups had similar starting levels. The report described the difference as a result observed in this study, not proof that one method would work best everywhere.

FAQ
