最初に結論｜because と because of の見分け方
- because＋節：We stayed home because it was raining.（雨が降っていたから家にいた）。
- because of＋名詞句：We stayed home because of the rain.（雨のため家にいた）。
- be due to＋名詞句：The delay was due to the storm.（遅延は嵐によるものだった）。due toは文頭や動詞修飾の位置でも使われます。
- owing to＋名詞句：Owing to strong winds, the event was canceled.（強風により中止）。やや改まった表現です。
- thanks to＋名詞句：Thanks to the volunteers, the event succeeded.（ボランティアのおかげで成功）。好ましい結果で使われやすい表現です。
- despite＋名詞句：Despite the rain, the event continued.（雨にもかかわらず継続）。原因を表すbecause ofとは論理が反対です。
英文法で注意する点｜due toを過度に単純化しない
due toはもともと形容詞的な用法で扱われることがありますが、現在の一般的な英語ではbecause ofと似た前置詞句として使われる場面もあります。「due toはbeの直後にしか使えない」と断定して覚える必要はありません。本記事では紛らわしさの少ないbe due to＋名詞句を基本の型として練習します。また、thanks toは必ずよい結果を意味するわけではなく皮肉にも用いられるため、前後の文脈が重要です。

長文1｜オンライン予約のトラブルと原因の違い
A community library introduced an online reservation system for study rooms. The staff hoped the service would make booking easier. In the first week, some visitors could not reserve a room because the website was temporarily unavailable. The problem was due to a technical error, not a lack of rooms. 長文の全文和訳
地域図書館は自習室のオンライン予約制度を導入し、予約を簡単にしたいと考えた。最初の週に一部の人が予約できなかったのはウェブサイトの一時停止によるもので、部屋不足ではなく技術的エラーが原因だった。支援チームのおかげで1日以内に修復されたが、予約数はすぐには増えなかった。高齢の利用者には電話予約を好む人もいたため、両方の方法を提供することにした。全員のアクセスが改善されたと言う前に、数か月の予約数を比較する計画だった。
長文2｜学校菜園の変化を一つの原因に決めつけない
A junior high school planted vegetables in a small garden behind its science building. At first, the plants grew slowly because the weather was unusually cold. In May, the plants became healthier. The teacher explained that the improvement might have been due to warmer weather, a new watering schedule, or both. Thanks to careful records, the class could compare temperature and water use over several weeks. However, they did not claim that the watering schedule alone had caused the change.
