Original Passage: What the Museum Survey Can Tell Us
The North Town Museum asked 72 visitors about a new audio guide. Of these visitors, 28 had tried the guide and 44 had not. Among the 28 users, 21 said that the stories were easy to understand. Some other users said they needed clearer instructions. Twelve of the 44 nonusers explained that they preferred reading the signs. Several nonusers also mentioned that their phone batteries were low. Museum workers were pleased with the positive comments, but they knew that the survey did not show what every visitor in town thought. They decided to keep both the audio guide and the written signs. They also planned to test larger buttons on the guide’s website. The workers wanted to make the museum easier to enjoy in different ways rather than choosing a single tool for everyone.

Original Passage: A Careful Look at Lunch Waste
The student council at Pine School invited 60 students to answer a lunch questionnaire. Forty-two students responded. Of those 42 students, 18 said their rice portions were sometimes too large. Others mentioned that they needed more time to eat or that they did not like certain foods. The school then tried allowing smaller rice portions for two weeks. Volunteers weighed leftover rice on five school days before the change and on five school days during the trial. The total weight was 12 kilograms before the change and 8 kilograms during the trial. This difference looked encouraging. However, the menu and the number of students present were not the same every day. The council therefore said that it could not prove that the new portion system alone caused the change. The school also allowed students to ask for another serving if they were still hungry.

At the end of the event, 24 of the 30 attendees borrowed at least one book. The other six attended but did not borrow any books. The library staff were happy with the number of books borrowed, but they did not know whether the children would keep reading more at home.

Original Passage: How Students Travel to School
Forty students in one class answered a survey about how they usually traveled to school. Twenty-five students walked, ten rode bicycles, and five took a bus. No student in this class selected a car as the main way to travel. The class then discussed road safety. Some students who walked said they wanted safer crossings near the school. The bicycle riders asked for more places to park their bikes. Bus users wanted clearer information about departure times. The teacher reminded the class that these numbers were only from one class of 40 students. They could not assume that all children in the city used the same types of transport. The students planned to ask other classes the same questions before suggesting changes to the school.

Original Passage: A Classroom Energy-Saving Trial
Students at Cedar School wanted to see whether reminder signs might help their class use less electricity. They recorded the total energy used in five classrooms during one school week before the signs were put up. The total was 80 kilowatt-hours. During a second school week, after signs were added near light switches, the five rooms used a total of 70 kilowatt-hours. The students calculated that the measured amount had fallen by 10 kilowatt-hours between the two weeks. However, the outdoor temperature was different, and some classrooms were used for fewer hours in the second week. The teacher explained that a lower number alone could not show that the signs were the only cause. The students decided to continue measuring energy use under more similar conditions and to ask teachers about classroom schedules.
