結論｜most・most of・almost・mostlyは「どこを修飾するか」で決まる
Most students＝『ほとんどの生徒』、most of the students＝『その生徒たちの大半』、almost all students＝『ほぼ全ての生徒』、mostly students＝『主に生徒で構成される／大部分が生徒』と読み分けます。Most は数量・割合を表す語、mostly は『主として』を表す副詞で、almost は『ほとんど、もう少しで』と完全な状態に近いことを示します。
英検準2級の短文語句空所補充、長文の数量比較、英作文で使うために、慶英会が独自40問と読解3本12問を作成しました。全52問の解答と全文和訳を収録。英検協会の過去問ではなく、特定の設問が本試験で出ることを保証するものではありません。
最初に覚える4つの基本形
- most + 一般の名詞：Most students enjoy reading.＝ほとんどの生徒は読書が好き。Most information is available online. と不可算名詞にも使える。
- most of + 限定された名詞句／代名詞：Most of the students・most of my friends・most of them。通常 most of students とだけ書かない。
- almost + all/every/no/形容詞/動詞など：Almost all students（ほぼ全生徒）、almost ready（ほぼ準備完了）、almost finished（もう少しで終わる）。Almost students は誤り。
- mostly + 動詞句・形容詞句等：Visitors were mostly families.（来場者は主に家族）、mostly true（大筋で本当）、mostly online（大部分がオンライン）。
mostとalmost allは完全に同じではない
『most』はある集団の大部分を指しますが、almost allは全体に非常に近いことを強調します。たとえば40人中26人の場合、一般にmost（過半数）とは言えても、almost all（ほぼ全員）とは言いにくいでしょう。逆に39人中40人のような場合はalmost allが自然です。これは目安であって、語そのものに固定の百分率が定義されているわけではありません。
most of themとmost themの差
『その人たちの大半』は most of them。目的格代名詞の前にofが必要です。一方『ほとんどの人』は most people。be動詞や一般動詞の単複も主語に合わせます（Most students are …、Most of the water is …）。

選択肢：most / most of / almost / mostly。空欄の直後が普通名詞、the・my・theseなどで限定された名詞句、形容詞・動詞、どれなのか確認してください。和訳のニュアンスもヒントにします。

誤文訂正・落とし穴を整理
- × Almost students like music. → ○ Most students like music.／○ Almost all students like music.。
- × Most of students came. → ○ Most students came.／○ Most of the students came.。
- × Most them were ready. → ○ Most of them were ready.。
- × Most of water are clean. → ○ Most of the water is clean.（特定の水の場合）。
- He almost finished. と He finished most of it. は近い場面もありますが、前者は終わりに近づいた程度、後者は全体の大半を終えたことに焦点があります。

よくある質問
Q．Most of students は誤りですか？
通常、名詞に限定語がない場合はMost students、具体的な集団ならMost of the studentsなどを使います。most of studentsの形は避けます。
Q．mostとalmost allでは人数が同じですか？
同じとは限りません。mostは大多数、almost allは全員に非常に近い状態を強調します。固定の数字を示す語ではない点に注意します。
Q．mostlyとalmostは同じ意味ですか？
mostlyは『主として、大部分は』、almostは『ほとんど、もう少しで』です。mostly readyとalmost readyのように意味が近づく場合もありますが、選択問題では何を強調するかを見て判断します。
Q．most of the water は単数扱いですか？
不可算名詞waterの場合は Most of the water is … と単数扱いです。Most of the students are … は複数名詞なので複数扱いです。
