A science class wanted to know whether a special lamp helped bean seeds grow faster. The students planted seeds in two containers. One container was placed under the new lamp, while the other was kept near a window. After two weeks, the plants under the lamp were taller. Some students immediately decided that the lamp was responsible for the difference. However, the teacher pointed out that the first container had also received more water. (21), the class could not tell whether the lamp alone had caused the extra growth. The students planned another experiment with equal amounts of soil and water in both containers. They would change only the source of light. They also agreed (22) so they could compare the results fairly over time.

Families in a small town wanted to make school uniforms less expensive. A community group organized an exchange where people could bring clean uniforms that were still in good condition and choose other items of a suitable size. Items with large holes or damaged buttons were sent to a separate repair table rather than placed on the exchange shelves. During the first month, families brought 84 jackets. Volunteers checked every jacket and placed 68 on the shelves. Sixteen needed cleaning or repairs before they could be offered to other people. By the end of the month, 53 of the 68 jackets on the shelves had been taken by other families. The rest were kept for the following month. The group recorded 72 family visits, but some families came more than once. Therefore, 72 was not the number of different families who used the program. The volunteers also asked 42 participants about their experience. Twenty-nine said they would use the exchange again, eight were unsure, and five said they had difficulty finding a suitable size. The group added clearer size labels and a simple list of available items. The organizers hoped that the exchange would reduce clothing waste and help families save money. However, they had not measured how many new uniforms families would otherwise have bought, so they did not claim that the program had already saved a particular amount of money or prevented a specific amount of waste. They planned to collect more information in the next term.

Q26. How many jackets were placed on the exchange shelves?

  1. 84
  2. 68
  3. 53
  4. 16

Q27. How many jackets on the shelves had been taken by other families?

  1. 16
  2. 68
  3. 53
  4. 72

Q28. What does the number 72 represent?

  1. Family visits, including some repeated visits
  2. The number of different families using the program
  3. The number of jackets repaired
  4. The number of questionnaires completed

Q29. Why didn’t organizers claim an exact saving in money or waste?

  1. The exchange accepted no jackets
  2. They had not measured purchases avoided or waste reduced
  3. Every jacket had been damaged
  4. They had already closed the exchange

2「They had not measured purchases avoided or waste reduced」

Writing

Yes, I think other schools should offer repair corners because students can learn practical skills and use clothes for longer. They may also reduce waste. What kinds of tools do students use in your corner? Who teaches them how to repair the clothes?

Yes, I think students should learn how to reduce waste at school. First, they can use materials more carefully and avoid throwing away useful items. For example, they could repair old school supplies. Second, learning these habits may help them save money and protect the environment. Schools should also measure results instead of simply guessing how much waste was reduced.

  • 語法:avoid doing、look forward to doing、responsible for、since、despiteを確認する。
