4つの接続・原因表現の基本形

• because＋節：Because the bus was late, Aya walked.（バスが遅れたので）
• because of＋名詞句：Because of the delay, Aya walked.（遅れのため）
• be due to＋名詞句：The delay was due to bad weather.（遅れの原因は悪天候）
• thanks to＋名詞句：Thanks to the staff, we finished on time.（職員のおかげで）
• due toとbecause ofは重なる：due toを必ず悪い結果だけと覚えない。
• thanks toにも皮肉な使い方がある：通常はよい結果への感謝を表すが、必ず肯定の意味だけとは限らない。

becauseとbecause ofの使い分けを先に理解する

Becauseの後にはthe train was lateなど主語と動詞を含む節が続きます。because ofの後にはthe train delayなど名詞句が続きます。「雨だから」と日本語で覚えるだけではなく、後ろの英語に主語と動詞があるかを確かめてください。

due toとthanks toの語順・意味

The delay was due to a technical problem.のdue toは原因を表す言い方で、一般にはbecause ofと意味が重なります。Thanks to careful planning, the event went well.は計画のおかげでよい結果になったことを表します。例外があるため、理由を表す語句が必ずポジティブ／ネガティブに分類できるという説明はしません。

The bus is due to arrive at six.は「バスは6時到着予定」という意味で、The delay is due to bad weather.の原因のdue to＋名詞句とは異なります。due to arriveはto不定詞が続いており、同じ綴りだからとすべて『〜が原因で』と訳してはいけません。
