結論｜according toは情報源、based onは根拠、in my opinionは意見

According to the school notice, the event starts at ten.は「学校のお知らせによると10時開始」。Based on our survey, we decided to add a class.は「アンケートを根拠にクラスの増設を決めた」。In my opinion, schools should offer more activities.は「私の意見では活動を増やすべき」。Because of the rain, the event was canceled.は「雨が原因で中止」。四つは情報源・判断の根拠・自分の意見・原因という違いがあります。

英検準2級の読解とライティングでは、誰の発言か、何を根拠に判断したか、本人の意見か、何が理由なのかを区別して書くことが重要です。本教材は慶英会オリジナルの4択24問と訂正16問、合計40問です。英検公式の過去問や毎回の出題予想ではありません。

4つの表現をまとめて比較する

• according to＋出所：According to the notice, the library closes at five.（案内によると）
• based on＋資料・経験：Based on the survey, we changed the program.（調査を根拠に）
• in my opinion＋自分の考え：In my opinion, school trips are useful.（私の意見では）
• because of＋名詞句：Because of the storm, the game was canceled.（嵐が原因で）
• because＋節：Because it rained, we stayed home.（雨が降ったので）

情報源と判断の根拠は同じではない

According to the survey, 60 percent of students prefer reading.は調査の結果に何が書かれていたかを報告します。Based on the survey, the school decided to open a new reading room.では調査結果を新しい意思決定の根拠として使っています。両表現が可能な文脈もありますが、読者がどの関係を知るべきかにより選びます。

according to meはどうする？

他人の意見や資料の記載を示す場合はaccording toが便利です。一方、自分の意見を述べる英作文ではIn my opinion, …が自然で分かりやすくなります。According to meが必ず文法誤りというわけではありませんが、学校英語・英検の意見英作文ではIn my opinionを優先する方が安全です。

because ofには名詞句、becauseには主語と動詞

Because of heavy rainは名詞句を導き、Because it rainedは主語itと動詞rainedを含む節を導きます。この違いはaccording to＋名詞句やbased on＋名詞句と同様に、直後の構造を見て判断する練習にもなります。
