5つの表現を最初に整理
- be absent from + 学校・行事：Hana was absent from school.（ハナは学校を欠席した）。病欠か無断欠席かは別情報。
- miss + 授業・機会・乗り物・期限：I missed the lesson / train / deadline.（授業を欠席・電車に乗り遅れる・期限を逃す）。文脈で意味が変わる。
- make-up lesson / make up a missed class：欠席分を補う授業・活動。make-up は名詞を修飾する際にハイフンでつながる。
- catch up on + 学習内容：catch up on homework / classwork / reading。遅れている内容を取り戻す。
- make up for + 損失・不利益：make up for lost time / the delay。埋め合わせ。make up a story（話を作り上げる）とは別の意味。
欠席と補講は同時に成立しても同じ意味ではない
欠席をしたら必ず補講がある、という制度の決まりはありません。Students who were absent may take the make-up test. なら補講・追試の対象者が示されていますが、Students who were absent must contact the office. なら最初にすべきことは事務室への連絡です。期限・対象者・次の行動まで読み取ります。
catch up onとmake up forの違い
catch up on my homework は終わっていない宿題を進めることです。make up for the delay は遅延による不利益を補うことです。make up for lost study timeのように学習の時間を補う表現もできるため、常に一語一訳ではなく対象に注目します。
