英検準2級のa number of・the number ofの違い｜are・is・have・has独自40問【全解答】

結論｜a number ofは複数動詞、the number ofは単数動詞

A number of students are studying.は「何人かの生徒が勉強している」。The number of students is increasing.は「生徒の人数が増えている」。前者はstudentsという複数の人に注目し、後者はthe number（人数という一つの数値）に注目するため、主語と動詞の一致が変わります。

a number ofとthe number ofを一覧で比較する

• a number of＋複数名詞＋are：A number of students are here.（複数の生徒がいる）
• a number of＋複数名詞＋have：A number of students have finished.（複数の生徒が終えた）
• the number of＋複数名詞＋is：The number of students is fifty.（人数は50）
• the number of＋複数名詞＋has：The number of students has increased.（人数が増えた）
• a large number of：A large number of visitors have arrived.（大勢の来場者）
• large numbers of：Large numbers of students are absent.（多くの生徒）

単語の直後に複数名詞があっても動詞が複数とは限らない

The number of members has increased.では、membersは複数ですが主語全体の中心は単数名詞numberです。A number of members have joined.では「何人かのメンバー」が実際に参加したことが中心となります。the number of＋複数名詞とa number of＋複数名詞を日本語の「人数」「何人か」に訳し分けてから動詞を選びます。

増減を表す長文ではthe number ofに注目する

The number of library users has risen from 40 to 50.は「図書館利用者の人数が40人から50人に増えた」です。A number of library users have requested new books.なら「複数の利用者が新しい本を希望した」です。人数の変化にはthe number of＋has increased / has decreasedが使いやすく、利用者それぞれの行動ならa number of＋have …が自然です。

A number ofとa small number ofでも一致は基本的に複数

A small number of students were absent.、A large number of students were absent.のように、a … number ofで「ある人数の生徒」を述べる場合は複数の生徒に動詞を一致させるのが標準です。「少ない人数だから単数」と覚えてはいけません。なおThe number of students was small.は人数という一つの数値を説明しています。
