結論｜fromは元の数、toは変化後、byは増減した分
The number increased from 40 to 50. は「40から50へ増加」。It increased by 10. は「10増えた」です。It increased by 25 percent. なら40に対する10の割合が25％という意味です。英検準2級の読解では、同じ段落の中に元の数字、増えた量、新しい合計が出てきても、何を尋ねられているかで答えは変わります。

increase・decreaseで覚える5つの表現
- increase from A to B：最初の値Aから新しい値Bへ増える。increase from 80 to 100＝80→100。
- increase by N：増加分N。increase by 20＝元の値に20加わる。
- decrease from A to B：元の値Aから新しい値Bへ減る。decrease from 100 to 70＝100→70。
- decrease by N：減少分N。decrease by 30＝30減る。
- increase/decrease by P percent：元の値に対する増減率P％。40→50なら10÷40×100＝25％増。
増加率は元の数を分母にする｜例題
40人から50人になった場合：増えたのは50−40＝10人。元の40人に対する増加率は10÷40×100＝25％です。50人から40人になった場合：減ったのは10人ですが、減少率は10÷50×100＝20％になります。元と新しい数を逆にすると、増減率は違います。
percentとpercentage pointsも区別する
30％の参加率が40％になれば、差は10パーセントポイントです。元の率30％に対する相対的な増加率は10÷30×100≒33.3％です。30％増と30パーセントポイント増は同じ意味ではありません。なお今回の読解8本は割合そのものではなく人数・使用量・時間の変化です。

まず各英文を読み、元の値（from）、変化後の値（to）、差（by）、変化率を区別します。解答・和訳・根拠は後半に置きました。選択肢の数字を暗記せず、根拠となる英文を見つけましょう。
