英検準1級のライティングで主語と動詞の一致に迷う方へ：動詞が複数形になるか単数形になるかは、意味上の人数だけでなく主語の中心語・of以下の名詞・接続する主語の位置によって変わります。慶英会が準1級の英作文・長文に応用できる独自40問を作成しました。全設問に全文和訳、正答、使い分けの理由を収録しています。
この教材は英文法のオリジナル演習で、英検協会の過去問ではありません。英検準1級の試験内容ではWritingに英文要約・英作文があり、文法の正確さは表現力の土台となります。英文法の説明はCambridge Dictionaryの主語と動詞の一致も参照しています。
結論｜主語の中心語を先に決める
The number of applications has increased. は「申請の総数」が主語で単数ですが、A number of applicants have responded. は「多数の申請者」を表し複数です。Most of the information is… のinformationは不可算、Most of the reports are… のreportsは複数です。見た目が似た主語でも動詞は変わります。

第1部｜each・every・one of・number ofの全解答
問1 正答(A) contains 全文和訳：面接報告のそれぞれには出来事について異なる説明がある。 理由：Each of＋複数名詞は学校の正式な文章では単数動詞。中心語はEach。
問2 正答(B) is 全文和訳：来場者とボランティアは一人ひとり身分証を着ける必要がある。 理由：everyを各単数名詞に繰り返す表現は個別に捉え、ここでは単数のis。

英検準1級の英作文で実際に間違える5つの場面
① each of the students のstudentsに惑わされる。② a number of と the number of を混同する。③ 60 percent of the water と 60 percent of the participants を同じ動詞にする。④ either A or B のBに近い主語を見落とす。⑤ a list of documents のdocumentsを主語だと勘違いする。本文の主語の中心語を○で囲む習慣をつけると改善しやすくなります。
注意：集団名詞と英語の地域差
committeeやgovernmentなどの集団名詞は英米差・集団全体か構成員かの捉え方で単数・複数の動詞が使われる場合があります。あいまいな問題を避けるため、本教材は中心語や文の条件から正答を判断できる例を中心に設計しました。neither ofは正式な筆記英語で単数一致を基本として学びますが、くだけた使用では複数形も見られます。
3日間の復習とFAQ
初日は40問を全て解き、間違いだけをノートに書き直します。翌日はofの後ろの名詞と本来の中心語を区別し、数詞・不可算名詞のまとまりを8文音読してください。3日目に40問を再テストし、根拠を日本語で説明できるか確認します。
a number of students is は正しいですか？
標準的な「多数の生徒」という意味ではa number of students areです。総数そのものを表すthe number of students isと区別します。
Each of the students are は正しいですか？
正式な英文ではEach of the students is / hasなど単数動詞を使います。複数形のstudentsではなくEachを中心に考えます。
