A school in a coastal town reviewed its disaster-preparation plan. Engineers found that several windows were poorly secured and classified them as physical safety hazards. The school then assessed the risk of injuries during severe storms, considering both the probability of broken glass and the possible harm to students. Officials also described rising sea levels as a long-term threat to the entire coastal community. During the review, the information-technology team discovered a vulnerability in the school messaging system: outdated accounts might allow unauthorized users to read emergency notices. To reduce students’ exposure to danger, the school moved outdoor activities away from damaged buildings while repairs were underway. The principal emphasized that repairing a hazard, reducing the risk of injury, responding to a wider threat, fixing a system vulnerability and limiting exposure were related but different safety measures.

D1. What did engineers identify as physical safety hazards?

D2. What two elements were considered when assessing injury risk?

D3. What security vulnerability was discovered?

D4. How did the school limit exposure while repairs were underway?

A regional research group studied a river used for recreation and agriculture. Samples revealed that one industrial facility was releasing a chemical that could pose a hazard if people came into contact with it at high concentrations. The researchers measured residents’ exposure by asking about the frequency and duration of activities near the river. They then estimated the risk of harm using available concentration data, while emphasizing that the calculations involved uncertainty. Officials said the incident represented a potential threat to public confidence in local water management. The study also identified a vulnerability: communities without affordable alternative water supplies would find it harder to respond to restrictions. The researchers avoided claiming that all residents had suffered health damage. Exposure differed across households, and the observed data did not establish that every exposed person would become ill. Their report recommended reducing contact while collecting better evidence.

D5. What was the identified chemical hazard?

D6. How did researchers assess residents’ exposure?

D7. What vulnerability affected some communities?

D8. Did the study establish that every resident was harmed?

D1:Poorly secured windows.

D2:The likelihood of broken glass and the harm it could cause.

D3:Outdated accounts could permit unauthorized access to emergency notices.

D4:It moved outdoor activities away from damaged buildings.

D5:A released substance that could cause harm at high levels of contact.

D6:By collecting information on the frequency and duration of activities near the river.

D7:They lacked affordable alternative water supplies.

D8:No. Exposure varied and the data did not prove universal harm.

Researchers measured exposure to a chemical, but the data did not show that everyone exposed had suffered harm.。 All residents were harmed by the chemical. Exposure levels were measured, but the extent of actual harm was uncertain.
