英検準1級のonly if・if・unlessの違い｜必要条件・例外を読む独自36問と全解説

英検準1級の長文・リスニングで only if と if を取り違えると、必要条件と結果を逆に読んでしまいます。例えば「入室は先生がいる場合に限る」と「先生がいれば入室できる」は同じとは限りません。unless、even if、provided that、not untilも、条件や例外の範囲を変えると正誤が逆転します。現行の英検準1級は語彙・長文の選択問題に加え、リスニングPart 1〜3、英文要約と意見英作文も出題されます。日本英語検定協会「準1級の試験内容」を参照してください。

only ifとifの違い｜必要条件・十分条件の入門

• A only if B：Aが成立するにはBが必要。ただしBを満たしただけでAが必ず成立するとは限りません。
• If B, A：Bという条件のもとではAが起きると述べる。Aが起きる方法はB以外にもあり得ます。
• Unless B, A：通常「Bでない場合はA」。Bであれば必ずnot Aになると推論するのは危険です。
• even ifとeven though：前者は仮定、後者は事実を認めて逆接を述べることが多いです。
• only when / not until：時間の前後や必要な時点に注目します。

例えば「登録者は顔写真がある場合に限り参加できる」という英文から、顔写真さえあれば年齢・申込期限を満たさなくても参加できるとは言えません。実際の資格要件は常に元の英文全体で判断します。

1. only if｜必要条件を逆転させない

A only if Bは「AであるためにはBが必要」。BだけでAが確定するとは限りません。

原文：Students may enter the laboratory only if a teacher is present.

同じ意味を保つ例：A teacher must be present for students to enter.

解説：先生の在室は入室の必要条件。先生がいれば必ず入室できるとは書かれていない。

原文：Applicants receive the discount only if they submit a valid student card.

同じ意味を保つ例：A valid student card is required to receive the discount.

解説：カード提出が必要。カード提出だけで他条件を満たす保証はない。

解説：試験の安全基準を満たさない限り拡大されない。

2. if｜条件が成立したときの結果

If A, Bは通常AならBという条件と結果。BからAを逆向きに推論できるとは限りません。

3. unless｜否定条件を正しく戻す

Unless A, Bは通常If not A, Bに近い働き。Aが起きたら必ずBの逆になる、と早合点しないでください。

解説：支払が届かない場合には保留。

4. even if・even though｜仮定と事実を区別

even ifは仮に〜でも、even thoughは実際に〜だけれども、という違いになることが多いです。

解説：値下げは未実現の仮定で、なお支援を要する可能性がある。

5. provided that・as long as｜条件付きの許可

provided thatとas long asは、条件を満たす場合という意味で用いられます。許可・計画の根拠を保持しましょう。

6. not until・except・without｜時間と例外

not untilはそれまで起きない、exceptは除外、withoutは何が欠けているかを示します。

• 問1：A student has completed training. Does ‘only if training is completed’ guarantee entry?

• Reading：only ifの条件を満たしていない選択肢、some→allと強めた選択肢を除く。
• Listening Part 3：申込期限・適用条件・設備条件が複数ある場合、一つだけ満たす選択肢を誤って選ばない。
• 英文要約：本文のif・unless・althoughを削って、必要条件が消えないようにする。
• 意見英作文：条件付きで政策に賛成する場合、if・provided that・as long asを自然に使う。
• 面接：仮定の状況と、実際に起きた出来事をeven ifとeven thoughで区別する。

よくある質問

only ifとifは何が違いますか？

only ifは必要条件を示すのに対し、ifはその条件が成り立つときの結果を述べます。BだけでAが確定するかは文脈を確認します。

unlessはif notと同じですか？

通常近い意味で使えますが、文の極性・条件の範囲を確認して自然に言い換えることが必要です。

even ifとeven thoughの違いは？

前者は仮に起きてもという仮定、後者は実際に起きていると認めた逆接を示すことが多いです。

as long asは時間の長さですか？

時間の長さを示す場合もありますが、条件節では『〜である限り』と条件の意味になることがあります。

条件を満たせば必ず合格・申請承認されますか？

本文に必要条件しか書かれていない場合、ほかの条件がある可能性を残します。
