Part C|

A town museum tested a new exhibition layout and counted how many visitors entered each room. This produced objective records of entries, although some people might enter a room more than once. Staff also collected comments. One visitor described the new layout as exciting, while another said it felt confusing. These were subjective reactions, not numerical measures of everyone’s experience. A newspaper published only the positive quotation and announced that visitors universally preferred the new layout. An adviser warned that the selection of comments was biased. The museum decided to include negative and positive feedback in its next report and to ask an impartial reviewer to examine the evaluation methods. The director said that recording more entries did not by itself establish greater visitor satisfaction.

A district considered two possible routes for an additional bus service. A residents’ association supported the northern route, while shop owners preferred the southern route. A meeting moderator stated that she would remain neutral between the options and allow both groups to present evidence. An engineering team measured travel times on both routes under stated conditions. The figures were objective observations for those test periods, but the team warned that weather and passenger demand could change the results at other times. An independent panel was appointed to make an impartial comparison using published criteria. The panel had not yet selected either route. The moderator reminded participants that neutrality did not mean assuming the routes were equally effective.

A school held a science-presentation competition. Each team submitted a report and answered questions. Judges used the same published scoring criteria, and the school removed team names from the written reports before the first review. Organizers hoped these steps would encourage impartial assessment. The judges also recorded objective details such as presentation length and whether required sources had been cited. Nevertheless, a judge’s impression of how persuasive a presentation sounded could still involve subjective judgment. A teacher warned that one judge’s preference should not be treated as an objective scientific finding. The school planned to compare judges’ scores and discuss large differences before issuing the final results. No final winner had been announced at that stage.

The survey recorded 84 positive answers. A neutral committee has not selected a route.

FAQ|objective
