retrofit a building with an accessible entrance=既存建物に段差のない入口を新設する。

Part C|

A community theater had experienced occasional problems with its air-conditioning system. Staff carried out routine maintenance, including filter checks, but the older equipment eventually failed. Technicians then repaired the damaged motor. At the same time, management was considering a larger renovation that would rearrange seating and improve accessibility. A separate proposal would retrofit the building with a more efficient ventilation system. Preservation specialists warned that any work on the decorative ceiling should respect the theater’s documented original design. They said that restoration of the ceiling was different from modernizing the theater. The director had approved repairs to keep the theater operating, but had not yet approved the larger renovation or retrofit.

A historic library needed to improve access for visitors using mobility aids. The building team proposed adding a modern step-free entrance through a retrofit. A different group wanted to restore the original wooden doors to their documented appearance. Architects explained that the two goals could be compatible, but they involved different kinds of work. Regular maintenance of the roof and windows would also be required regardless of which design was selected. During an inspection, workers discovered a broken drain and arranged for its repair. The council had approved only the inspection and the urgent drain repair. It would compare the costs and effects of the proposed accessibility retrofit and historical restoration before deciding on a complete renovation.

A school upgraded several outdated classrooms in a renovation project. Desks were rearranged, lighting was improved, and accessible routes were marked more clearly. Staff continued routine maintenance of the new equipment. A few weeks later, a broken door mechanism required an additional repair. Teachers reported that students seemed more comfortable in the new rooms, but the school had not compared examination scores with those from earlier years. The principal warned that a renovated space did not automatically prove an improvement in learning outcomes. The school was also considering retrofitting two older classrooms with new ventilation equipment, but that plan had not been approved. The administration would review operating costs before expanding the work.
