Several public libraries have extended their opening hours to help students and workers who cannot visit during the day. Early reports suggest that evening attendance has increased, especially near railway stations. However, the change has also created challenges. Staff members must work different shifts, and some libraries need additional security measures after dark. One city is now comparing visitor numbers with operating costs rather than judging the policy only by how many people enter the building. Officials say they will continue the trial for another three months before deciding whether to make the longer hours permanent. They also plan to ask evening visitors whether the new schedule has changed their study habits.

Q9. What is the city comparing?
A. Visitor numbers and operating costs.
B. The age of staff and the number of books.

Q10. Has the city decided to make the longer hours permanent?
A. Yes. The longer hours are already permanent.
B. No. It will continue the trial before deciding.

A high school introduced a tablet-lending service for students who had difficulty completing online homework at home. The initial plan allowed students to borrow a device for one week. Although many students welcomed the idea, teachers soon noticed that some assignments required a reliable internet connection as well as a tablet. The school therefore began offering a small number of portable Wi-Fi devices. Because demand is greater than the number of available devices, priority is currently given to students with the most urgent assignments. The school will review the rules at the end of the term, using feedback from both students and teachers. Administrators stress that access to equipment does not by itself guarantee better grades.

Q11. Why did the school add portable Wi-Fi devices?
A. Tablets could no longer be used for homework.
B. Some assignments required internet access as well as a tablet.

Q12. How are devices currently allocated?
A. Students with urgent assignments receive priority.
B. They are allocated by lottery to all residents.

When a town first introduced a small shuttle bus, officials expected it to serve older residents who had difficulty reaching the shopping district. Yet passenger numbers remained low during the first month. Interviews revealed that the route passed several busy streets but did not stop close to the health clinic, which many potential passengers visited regularly. The town then added a stop near the clinic and adjusted the morning timetable. Ridership rose in the following weeks, but officials say the increase does not prove that the route change was the only cause. Seasonal weather and a local advertising campaign may also have influenced demand. The town will monitor passenger numbers over a longer period before purchasing another vehicle.

Q13. What was the problem with the original route?
A. It did not stop near the health clinic.
B. It was too expensive to operate at all.

Q14. What do officials say about the later increase in ridership?
A. It proves the route change was the only cause.
B. Other factors may also have contributed.

A group of volunteers began recording the types of litter collected during monthly beach cleanups. Their goal was to identify which materials appeared most frequently, rather than simply reporting the total weight of collected waste. After six months, plastic packaging was the largest category by item count, while pieces of abandoned fishing equipment accounted for much of the total weight. The group realized that these two measurements described different aspects of the problem. It decided to publish both the number of items and the estimated weight for each category. The volunteers also noted that strong winds sometimes brought additional litter onto the beach shortly before a cleanup, making comparisons between months difficult. They plan to record weather conditions in future reports.

Q15. Which category had the most items?
A. Abandoned fishing equipment by weight.
B. Plastic packaging.

Q16. Why will the group record weather conditions?
A. Wind can affect how much litter is present at each cleanup.
B. Weather records will replace item counts.

Yes. Libraries provide information and quiet study spaces that are available even to people with limited resources. For example, students who cannot study comfortably at home can use them after school.

I support lending devices when schools can also provide clear instructions and technical support. A tablet alone may not help students who lack a reliable internet connection at home.

Yes, but safety needs to come first. Cities should improve cycling routes and offer clear traffic guidance so that people can choose bicycles without facing unnecessary risks.
