hereは「ここ」、thereは「そこ・あそこ」、over thereは「あちら・あそこ（指し示す離れた場所）」、whereは「どこ」という疑問詞です。 We are here at the station.（私たちはここ、駅にいます）とThe bakery is over there.（パン屋はあそこです）を比べると、話している人がいる場所と、目指す場所が違うことが分かります。

here・there・over there・whereの違い

hereとthereは話す人の位置を基準にする
話し手が駅にいれば、駅をhereと言えます。駅から離れた場所に図書館があればthereと言えます。話し手が図書館へ移れば、今度は図書館がhereになります。つまりhereとthereは地図の北・南のような固定の方角ではなく、話す人とその場所との関係で使い方が変わります。
thereとover thereの違いは距離だけではない
thereは話し手がいるhereとは別の場所を広く指します。over thereは向こうの場所を指差したり示したりする場面でよく使います。しかし実際には話し手と聞き手の認識・視線・距離によって使い分けが変わるため、必ず何メートル以上離れたらover thereという数値基準はありません。本教材では「あちらに見える」と文脈を明示しています。
go thereとcome hereにtoがない
go there（そこへ行く）、come here（ここへ来る）では、方向を表す副詞there・hereに通常toを付けません。go to schoolやcome to the stationのように名詞の前にtoが必要な場合と区別してください。
Where is …? と Where are …?の違い
Where is the station?は駅1つの場所を尋ねる質問、Where are the books?は本が複数ある場所を尋ねる質問です。Whereの後ろのbe動詞は、探している物が単数か複数かによって変わります。

復習｜話す場所を入れ替えて同じ道案内を作る
初日は駅や図書館がhereなのかthereなのかを判断します。翌日にはAとBが目的地に移動したと想像して、Here is the library. / The station is over there.のように説明し直してください。3日後に和文英訳・誤文訂正を行い、話す人の場所とthereの指示対象が理解できるか確認します。
FAQ｜よくある質問
hereとthereは絶対的な距離で決まりますか？
いいえ。話し手のいる場所と、別の場所をどう示すかという関係で決まります。
thereとover thereはいつも別ですか？
重なる場合があります。over thereは離れた場所を指し示す場面で自然ですが、距離だけで厳密に区別する規則はありません。
go to thereは正しい？
通常、方向を表す副詞thereにはtoを付けず、go thereとします。
