in front ofは『〜の前に』、behindは『〜の後ろに』、aboveは『〜より上方に』、belowは『〜より下方に』という意味です。英検5級の学校・町・道案内の英文を読むとき、前後の位置と上下の位置を区別することが大切です。in front of the school / behind the door / above the desk / below the clockをまず覚えましょう。

4つの位置表現を前後と上下の2組に分ける

in front ofとbehindは『前後』を表す
in front ofは学校や駅などの前方を表すとき、behindはドアや建物の後ろ側を表すときに使います。in front ofは3語をひとまとまりに扱い、最後のofを忘れないようにしてください。behindには通常ofを付けません。
例えばThe bus is in front of the school.ならバスは学校の前、The garden is behind the school.なら庭は学校の後ろです。『何の前・後ろなのか』を表す名詞が続く点は共通しています。
aboveとbelowは『高さの比較』を表す
aboveは基準より高い位置、belowは低い位置を示します。The clock is above the map.とThe map is below the clock.は、同じ配置を上と下の両方向から説明した英文です。
aboveとonは同じではありません。on the deskは机の表面に接していることが基本ですが、above the deskは机より高い位置を意味し、必ずしも表面に接していません。belowとunderも位置関係が重なる場面がありますが、belowは『基準より低い位置』に焦点を当てます。
教室の物の配置を英文にしてみる
黒板の前に先生が立ち、時計が黒板の上方にあり、その時計より下にポスターがある場面を想像してください。The teacher is in front of the blackboard. / The clock is above the blackboard. / The poster is below the clock.と3文で説明できます。実際に図を描いてから英文にすると、語の意味を覚えるだけでなく位置関係を使えるようになります。

括弧内の日本語の意味を確認し、A〜Dから適切な表現を選んでください。図を見ない場合でも正解が決まるよう、問いたい位置関係を文中に明示しています。

問37〜48は英語の語順と前置詞の誤りを1か所直します。in front ofを分けてしまう、behind/above/belowに不要な前置詞を加えるなど、よくある失点を確認してください。

自宅でできる復習｜物の配置を変えて3文を作る
ペンと本と箱を机に置き、位置を変えて説明しましょう。ペンが箱の前にあればThe pen is in front of the box.、後ろに置けばThe pen is behind the box.と文を変えます。棚や壁の写真を使い、above・belowでも2文作ってみてください。
最初は日本語で位置を説明してから英文を作り、翌日には日本語を隠して位置だけを見て英語で答えます。3日後に第2部・第3部を解き直し、前置詞ofの有無とis/areが正しいか確認すると記憶を定着させやすくなります。
よくある質問
in front ofとbehindは反対語ですか？
前後の位置を表す対比表現です。in front ofは前方、behindは後方を表します。観察する向きや物の配置によって「前・後ろ」の判断が変わることもあります。
aboveとonの違いは？
aboveは基準より上方、onは基本的に何かの表面に接する・支えられることを表します。a lamp above the tableとa book on the tableを比べると理解しやすくなります。
behindの後にはofが必要ですか？
必要ありません。behind the doorとし、behind of the doorとはしません。一方、in front of the doorではofが必要です。
5級にabove・belowが必ず出ますか？
必ず出るという意味ではありません。初歩的な場所表現から中1の空間表現へ学習を広げるための補強教材です。実際の出題は公式過去問で確認してください。
