northは北、southは南、eastは東、westは西です。 地図の上が北（↑N）なら、右が東、下が南、左が西になります。例えばThe library is north of the school.は「図書館は学校の北にあります」という意味です。英検5級の道案内・町の英語に加え、中1で学ぶ方角の表現にもつなげましょう。
慶英会が架空の3×3マスの地図8枚×4問＝32問、和文英訳8問、誤文訂正8問、独自48問を制作しました。実際の町や店舗の配置を示す地図ではありません。すべての地図の上を北と定義しているため、地図を見て場所の位置関係を判断できます。問題・解答・日本語訳・理由までこのページで確認できます。
英検5級の正式なReadingは短文空所補充15問・会話文空所補充5問・語句整序5問で、地図8枚を読む独立した大問があるわけではありません。これは位置表現と簡単な道案内を練習するための慶英会独自の発展教材です。
東西南北と英語の方角

地図の向き｜northが必ず上とは限らない
一般的な地図では北を上に示すことが多いものの、実際の地図が回転している場合もあります。本教材の8枚は全て上＝北、右＝東、下＝南、左＝西と明記してあります。実際の案内板では北を示すNや方位矢印を最初に見て、方向を判断してください。
north ofとgo north fromの違い
The library is north of the school.は二つの場所の位置関係、Go north from the school.は学校を出発して北へ移動する指示です。north of＋場所は「〜の北に」、go northは「北へ進む」を意味します。west of / east of / south ofも同じ考え方で使えます。
前後・左右の表現とはどう違う？
in front of / behindは建物の正面や背後を、left/rightは話す人や進行方向を基準とする場合があります。一方north/east/south/westは地図上の方角です。人が反対を向けば左右は入れ替わりますが、北という方角そのものは変わりません。

復習法｜地図を1回転させる
1日目は8枚の架空地図を上が北として読みます。翌日は地図1枚を紙に写し、教室や図書館などの名前を消して別の名前を入れてください。3日後に、実際に方位矢印Nを回転させたと仮定して、方角と左右が一致しない場合も区別できるか確かめます。道案内では聞き手が向く方向によってleft/rightが変わる点を忘れないようにしましょう。
よくある質問
northは上という意味ですか？
northは北という方角です。この教材では北を上に指定していますが、実際の地図は向きが異なることもあります。
north ofとgo northは同じですか？
north ofは場所の位置関係、go northは北へ進む動作を示します。
eastとrightは必ず同じですか？
北が上の地図では右が東ですが、人が立って向く方向によって右と東は一致しない場合があります。
