宇宙英単語 / 惑星5題40問 / 解答と全訳 / 復習方法

planet・moon・orbit・ringsを読む

planet=惑星、moon=月・衛星、orbit=周回する、the Sun=太陽、surface=表面、atmosphere=大気、storm=嵐、ring=環、smallest=最小の、largest=最大の、closest=最も近い、という意味です。

Original English reading:MERCURY — THE CLOSEST PLANET. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. It is also the smallest planet in our solar system. It is only a little larger than Earth’s Moon. Mercury moves around the Sun faster than any other planet. One trip around the Sun takes only eighty-eight Earth days. Mercury has many holes, called craters, on its rocky surface. It can be very hot during the day and very cold at night. Mercury is not the hottest planet, even though it is closest to the Sun. That title belongs to Venus. A NASA spacecraft named MESSENGER studied Mercury for several years. Scientists use information from spacecraft to learn more about this small planet.

Original English reading:VENUS — A VERY HOT PLANET. Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It is almost the same size as Earth, so people sometimes call it Earth’s twin. However, living on its surface would be very difficult. Venus has a very thick atmosphere, which traps heat. Because of that, Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system. The surface temperature is about 467 degrees Celsius. This is much hotter than the usual temperature on Earth. Venus also turns slowly in a direction opposite to the rotation of most planets. A NASA spacecraft called Magellan used radar to make maps of the surface. From Earth, people may see Venus shining brightly in the sky. Venus is a planet, not a star.

惑星3|Mars|赤い惑星と2つの月

Original English reading:MARS — THE RED PLANET. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun. It is often called the Red Planet because minerals in its soil make the ground look reddish. Mars is a cold world with a very thin atmosphere. Its surface has large mountains, deep valleys, and dry areas. Long ago, water may have flowed across parts of Mars. Scientists study old rocks to find clues about the planet’s history. Mars has two small moons named Phobos and Deimos. Phobos is larger than Deimos and moves closer to Mars. NASA has sent robotic rovers to travel across the surface of Mars. These machines can take pictures and study rocks. No people have walked on Mars so far.

Unlike Earth, Jupiter does not have a solid surface that people could stand on. It is made mostly of gases, including hydrogen and helium. Jupiter spins very quickly, so one day there lasts only about ten hours. Jupiter has large clouds and storms. Its famous Great Red Spot is a huge storm that scientists have watched for many years. Some of Jupiter’s moons are also interesting to scientists. Europa, one of its moons, may have a large ocean under its icy surface. NASA’s Juno spacecraft has studied Jupiter from orbit.
