英検4級の地図・道案内・場所の説明で、next to・between・in front of・behind・across fromを理解するには「同じ側で隣か、道路を挟んだ向かいか」を区別します。The cafe is next to the library.なら同じ並びで隣、The cafe is across from the library.なら道路などを挟んで向かい合う位置です。between A and Bは二つの物の間を表します。

英検4級の公式出題形式と地図教材の位置付け

日本英語検定協会の4級の試験内容では、中学中級程度を目安にリーディング35分・リスニング約30分で短文・会話・語句整序・長文などが扱われます。本教材は場所の表現を文字地図で確認する独自演習であり、英検4級で同一形式の文字地図大問があるという意味ではありません。公式の過去問の転載でもありません。

next to・between・across from・behind・in front ofの違い

「左」「右」は見る方向で入れ替わるため、このページの地図では西＝左、東＝右、北＝上、南＝下と固定します。位置関係の根拠を曖昧にしないため、建物は道路の北側と南側に配置し、同じ列を道路を挟んで真正面にある施設とします。地図で示した関係はすべて架空です。

acrossとacross fromの違い：walk across the roadは「道路を渡る」という移動、the shop is across from the schoolは「店は学校の向かい」という位置を表します。またin front ofは建物の正面にあること、behindは裏側にあることです。単語の日本語訳だけでなく、行動なのか位置なのかも確かめましょう。

たとえば地図AではPost OfficeとParkが同じ中央列の上下にあるためacross fromです。一方、LibraryとPost Officeは同じ北側の隣の列なのでnext toです。場所の名前を覚えることより、どの語がどの幾何学的な関係を表すかを理解することを優先してください。

Q. next toとnearはどう違いますか。

next toは直接隣接する位置、nearは近い位置を表し、必ずしも隣接していません。

Q. acrossとacross fromは同じですか。

across the roadは道路を渡る方向・移動、across from the schoolは学校の向かいという場所を示します。

Q. betweenの後ろは何を置きますか。

基本はbetween A and Bで二つの場所・物を結びます。between A to Bにはしません。
