「betweenは必ず二つ、amongは必ず三つ以上」とだけ覚えるのは正確ではありません。betweenは三つ以上の個別対象の関係にも使えます。まず初学者は『A and Bの間＝between』『集団の中＝among』を目安とし、前後の意味を確かめます。besideとbesidesはsの有無で意味が変わります。

among＋複数の人・物の集まりで『〜の中に』『〜に囲まれて』。厳密に『3人以上しか使えない』と決めつけず、まとまった集団を意識します。

よくある質問

betweenは2つのものだけに使うのですか。

いいえ。3つ以上でも個別の関係が意識されるとbetweenが使われることがあります。初学者はbetween A and Bの基本から覚えてください。

besideとbesidesは同じですか。

違います。besideは隣・そば、besidesは〜に加えてという意味です。

nearとbesideは同じ意味ですか。

どちらも近い場所を表しますが、besideはより『すぐ隣に』という位置関係を示します。
