英検3級のリスニングで thirteen（13）とthirty（30）、fourteen（14）とforty（40）、fifteen（15）とfifty（50）、sixteen（16）とsixty（60）を聞き間違えてしまう中学生へ。数字の単語そのものは知っていても、日時や人数が一度に登場すると、one thirteen（1時13分）と one thirty（1時30分）、October thirteenth（10月13日）と October thirtieth（10月30日）を混同しやすくなります。本教材では慶英会が独自作成した読み上げ用の英文台本8本と各5問、合計40問・全解説を掲載しました。保護者や講師が英文を読んで練習することも、一人で台本を使い数字の意味を整理することもできます。ただし本記事には実際の音声は付属していません。 発音・速度は公式過去問の音源で必ず確認してください。
制作・監修：慶英会｜慶應義塾大学卒・英検1級塾長。 英検協会による3級リスニングは、会話の応答文選択10問が1回放送、会話内容一致10問と短文内容一致10問がそれぞれ2回放送です。以下の台本は試験の内容と同一ではなく、数字・時刻・日付に特化した独自練習です。公式の形式は日本英語検定協会の3級試験内容で確認できます。
thirteenとthirtyは音節とアクセントも違う
13〜19の-teenと30〜90の-tyを区別
thirteen / thirty はどちらも似た子音を含みますが、一般的な単独発音では thirteen の-teenに強勢が置かれ、thirty は最初の音節が強く読まれる傾向があります。同様に fifteen / fifty も、語尾の違いとアクセントが手掛かりになります。ただし自然な会話では文全体のリズムに合わせて強勢位置が変わる場合があるため、アクセントだけで絶対的に判別できるとは考えないでください。
特に thirteen と thirty、fourteen と forty、fifteen と fifty、sixteen と sixty を短いペアで読み、実際の音源でも繰り返して聞き比べます。thirtieth は30番目、thirteenth は13番目の序数形です。数字の後に-thがあるだけで同じ日付だと思わないようにしましょう。
one thirteenは1:13、one thirtyは1:30
The train leaves at one thirteen. は午後1時13分、It leaves at one thirty. は1時30分です。英語では時刻を one thirteen / two fifteen / three thirty のように読む場合があります。数字を聞いたときは、1つ目が時、2つ目が分かを確認してください。同じ音でも人数の13と時刻の1:13では必要な情報が違います。
日付の13thと30thの違い
on October thirteenth は10月13日、on October thirtieth は10月30日です。the festival was first planned for the thirteenth, but it will now be held on the thirtieth のような案内では、さらに変更前後を読み分ける必要があります。数字を正しく聞き取った後も、最初の予定か新しい予定かを確認することが重要です。
英検3級リスニングで数字を拾う4つの手順
- ①設問の情報を先に確認：何日・何時・何人・いくらかを決める
- ②数字の後の名詞を聞く：students / minutes / yen / tickets / Roomなどと対応づける
- ③but・instead・notを聞き落とさない：古い情報と変更後の情報を分ける
- ④数字を意味のある単位に戻す：one thirtyは1:30、thirteen studentsは13人と理解する
音声を聞いている最中に、すべての英文を日本語へ訳す必要はありません。When does the train leave? ならleaveの後の時刻、How many students? ならstudentsの数、How much is the ticket? なら料金です。数字と関係する語を一緒に記憶することで、ほかの数字を答えに選ぶのを防ぎます。
本記事の台本は、親子や講師と練習する場合に最初は英文を見ずに一度読み上げてもらい、難しければ二度目を聞き、最後に台本と根拠を確認する方式で使えます。ただし読み上げ者の発音・速度は公式音声と一致しないため、この回数設定をそのまま試験の再現と考えないでください。

数字が聞き取れても答えを間違える主な原因
数字のペアが似ている：thirteen/thirty、fifteen/fiftyなどを音源と一緒に繰り返す。情報の種類を間違える：人数・時刻・料金・日付を区別する。変更前を選ぶ：but / instead / new dateで変更後を確認する。締切と開催日を混同：register byとevent onの違いを読む。
例えば電話の案内で Students should arrive at two forty-five. The class begins at three. なら、到着は2:45、開始は3:00です。同じ案内に複数の時刻があっても、設問の動詞がarriveかbeginかによって答えは変わります。数字をただ覚えるのではなく、情報と動詞の組み合わせで処理することが重要です。

よくある質問
Q. thirteenとthirtyはアクセントだけで区別できますか？
A. 単独での発音には強勢位置の違いがあることが多いですが、文中で強勢が変わることもあります。語尾の音、周囲の単語、文全体の意味とあわせて判断しましょう。
Q. one thirteenは何時何分ですか？
A. 時刻の文脈なら1時13分です。one thirtyは1時30分なので違います。
Q. thirteenthとthirtiethは何日を表しますか？
