Riverside School installed solar panels on the roof of its library. The school now publishes a daily energy report to help students understand the difference between generating and consuming electricity. On a clear Monday, the panels generated sixty kilowatt-hours (kWh) over the entire day, while the library consumed ninety kWh. A kilowatt-hour measures a quantity of energy; it is not the same as a kilowatt (kW), which is a measure of power.
Some students immediately calculated that the library must have used exactly sixty kWh of solar power itself. However, the report did not show when the electricity was produced and when the library used it. Without that timing information, the students could not determine the amount of direct solar consumption or grid electricity accurately.
The school plans to install a meter that records generation and consumption every hour. It is also considering a small battery to store some daytime energy for evening use. Neither project has been approved yet. The teacher warned students that a battery stores energy but does not create additional electricity.
The principal wants to assess the project’s financial benefits after a full year. One sunny day is not enough to predict annual savings, because generation changes with weather and the length of daylight.

North City Library noticed that its electricity use was especially high on weekdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. This period was described as a peak period because several systems were operating at once. The library could not simply stop its ventilation or emergency lighting, since those systems were needed for safe operation.
The manager proposed moving a non-urgent digital archive task to an off-peak period in the morning. The task uses ten kWh of energy, regardless of whether it runs in the morning or afternoon under the conditions measured. Moving it would therefore reduce afternoon consumption by ten kWh while adding ten kWh to the morning total. It would shift demand in time, not automatically reduce the day’s total energy use.
The library also replaced some old lights with more efficient ones. During a separate test, the new lights consumed six kWh less per day than the old lights for the same hours of use. That change can reduce total daily consumption, unlike merely moving a task to a different time.
Staff will compare the two measures separately. The manager has not yet decided whether the shift in archive work is convenient for employees, and any reduction in electricity bills depends partly on the actual tariff. The library will review the results after a month.

A small coastal town installed a battery at its emergency learning center. The battery’s usable storage capacity is forty kWh. Capacity describes the maximum usable energy it can hold under the stated operating conditions, not the amount of electricity it generates. The battery normally receives power from the local electrical system, which includes a solar installation.
One evening, the center’s monitor showed thirty-two kWh stored in the battery. The operator decided to keep twelve kWh as a reserve for essential lighting. Under a simplified plan that ignores conversion losses, this left twenty kWh available for other activities before the reserve was reached. The operator did not say that all thirty-two kWh could be freely spent.
The center considered offering an evening computer workshop requiring sixteen kWh of energy. That workshop would fit within the twenty-kWh allowance in the simplified plan, leaving four kWh above the reserve. However, staff had not yet checked the battery’s maximum power output or any losses, so this energy calculation alone did not guarantee that every device could operate at once.
The council will test the center’s emergency procedure next month. The battery is designed as backup equipment, not a replacement for maintaining the local grid and checking safety.

A rural community considered adding two small wind turbines to its energy plan. Before installation, a consultant estimated that they might generate about four hundred kWh on a typical windy day. The estimate was based on earlier wind measurements from the area, not a guarantee for every day.
The turbines began operating in May. On the first Monday they generated three hundred sixty kWh. On the following Tuesday, when the wind was weaker, they generated one hundred eighty kWh. The operators recorded these as actual outputs for those specific days. They did not claim that the turbines had a constant daily output.
The community also wanted to use some electricity for an evening sports center. Wind generation sometimes continued after sunset, while solar panels nearby stopped producing electricity then. However, neither source could be expected to provide an identical output every evening. The planner proposed combining more than one source with storage and grid connections to manage changing conditions.
Residents asked whether the turbines would certainly repay their cost within five years. The consultant answered that the figures were not sufficient to guarantee a payback period. Maintenance, electricity prices, weather, and equipment life would also affect the outcome. A full review is planned after twelve months of operation.

初日に40問、2日目に単位と数値の整理、3日目にactual / estimated / may / cannot guarantee / under the simplified planを確認します。
FAQ
