英検2級の数値・調査長文ではmean(平均)、median(中央値)、range(最大と最小の差)、outlier(外れ値)を区別して読む必要があります。

A town library counted visitors for seven consecutive days. The daily totals were 40, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46 and 160. The final day included a special book festival that attracted visitors from neighboring towns. The library wanted to summarize attendance without giving readers a misleading impression of an ordinary day. The sum of the seven daily totals was 420, so the mean, or arithmetic average, was 60 visitors per day. The median was 44 because it was the middle value when all seven numbers were ordered. The range was 120, calculated by subtracting the smallest number, 40, from the largest, 160. The festival day’s count was an outlier compared with the other six days. An outlier is a value that is unusually far from most other observations; it is not necessarily an error. In this case, the festival provided a reasonable explanation for the high count. The manager decided to publish the total, mean and median together. She did not claim that 60 visitors came on most days, because six days recorded fewer than 60. The library planned to track festival and non-festival days separately in future reports.

Five students volunteered to record how many minutes they spent studying English independently on Saturday. Their reported times were 20, 25, 25, 30 and 100 minutes. The student council calculated a total of 200 minutes, giving a mean of 40 minutes per student. The median was 25 minutes because the third number in the ordered list was 25. One student studied for 100 minutes, much longer than the others. The report therefore presented both the mean and the median rather than saying that most students studied for 40 minutes. In fact, four students reported less than 40 minutes. The range between the longest and shortest time was 80 minutes. A teacher reminded the council that the group was very small and consisted of volunteers. The results described the five participants, not the typical habits of every student in the school. In addition, study time did not directly show how many vocabulary words each student remembered. The council proposed a larger survey with clear questions about study methods and learning outcomes. It also planned to ask participants to keep a short log rather than relying entirely on their memories at the end of the day.

A secondary school monitored the weight of paper collected for recycling every Friday. In the six weeks before a new collection-box system, the amounts were 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 kilograms. The mean was 15 kilograms and the median was also 15. The range was 10 kilograms, from the smallest amount of 10 to the largest of 20. During the next six weeks, the amounts were 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22 kilograms. The new mean was 17 kilograms, the median was 17 and the range remained 10. The average weekly amount increased by 2 kilograms, which was about 13.3 percent of the earlier mean. The students were pleased, but the teacher cautioned that the school had also held a book-replacement campaign during the second period. More old paper might have been available, so the change could not confidently be attributed only to the new collection boxes. The class planned to record paper sources and compare similar periods the following year. More paper collected was a measurable outcome, but it did not automatically prove that the total environmental impact of the school’s activities had fallen.

A school monitored delays on one morning bus route for six days. The delays were 10, 12, 12, 15, 17 and 60 minutes. The total delay was 126 minutes, so the mean was 21 minutes per day. However, the median was 13.5 minutes, calculated from the two middle values, 12 and 15, in the ordered list. The 60-minute delay occurred when temporary roadworks blocked the usual route. It was an unusually high observation rather than the delay passengers experienced on most days. The range of the recorded delays was 50 minutes, calculated as 60 minus 10. A student suggested announcing that the bus was usually 21 minutes late because the arithmetic mean was 21. The transport coordinator replied that the word “usually” could be misleading: five of the six recorded days had delays below 21 minutes. She suggested showing the individual figures and median as well. The report covered one bus route and six mornings only. It did not include canceled buses, delays during other seasons or differences in road traffic on holidays. The school intends to continue monitoring before changing the recommended departure time for all students.
