The student council held a small charity market to raise money for the local children’s library. It sold handmade notebooks, bookmarks and snacks. At the end of Saturday, the council counted total sales revenue of 120,000 yen. Revenue means money received from selling goods or providing services before relevant costs have been deducted.
The students had paid 55,000 yen for materials and ingredients, 20,000 yen for stall equipment and 5,000 yen for delivery. For this fictional event, these were the only expenses. The council therefore calculated an event surplus of 40,000 yen. It would be misleading to announce that the entire 120,000 yen could be donated without considering the costs.
A local company had also pledged an additional 10,000 yen to support the library. However, the company had not yet transferred the donation. The student council recorded it as a promise rather than cash already received. If it arrived later, it would add to the funds available for the project.
The council plans to publish a short financial report and confirm how the library will use the money. The library may buy reading materials, but no final shopping list has been approved. Students were asked to distinguish confirmed sales, paid expenses, promised donations and future plans.

A community café wants to understand whether it can operate on Saturdays without losing money. It sells a cup of tea for 600 yen. The ingredients and disposable cup cost 250 yen for each cup sold. These expenses change with the number of cups, so the café calls them variable costs.
For each Saturday, the café also pays 30,000 yen for space and basic staffing. In this simplified example, the amount stays the same whether it sells fifty or one hundred cups, so it is treated as a fixed cost. The café has no other expenses in this fictional calculation.
On the first Saturday, the café sold one hundred cups. Sales revenue was 60,000 yen. The total variable cost was 25,000 yen, and the fixed cost was 30,000 yen. After subtracting both, the café had a 5,000-yen operating surplus for that day. The owner warned students that the 35,000 yen remaining after variable costs alone was not the final surplus, because it still had to cover the fixed cost.
The café is considering a reusable-cup system. It might reduce disposable waste, but staff have not yet measured the washing and storage costs. They will test the system before claiming that it will increase profits.

The Oak Museum hosted a weekend science exhibition. It sold thirty early tickets for 1,200 yen each and twenty regular tickets for 1,500 yen each. Staff calculated gross ticket sales of 66,000 yen. Gross sales here means the total ticket payments before the event’s transaction fees and other expenses.
The ticket service charged the museum a total processing fee of 6,000 yen. After that fee, the amount paid into the museum’s account was 60,000 yen. The accountant called it net ticket receipts after processing fees, but warned that it was not necessarily the exhibition’s profit. The museum still had to account for staff time, cleaning and other operating expenses.
An advertisement had predicted that seventy visitors might attend. In fact, fifty tickets were sold, and forty-eight ticket holders entered the exhibition. The number of tickets sold was therefore not the same as the number of visitors who actually attended. Some people could buy tickets and then fail to come.
The team will review whether early tickets helped families plan their visits. Because the exhibition lasted only one weekend, staff will not assume that the same sales pattern would occur every month.

A secondary school is planning a trip to a history museum. The coach company quotes a fixed fee of 48,000 yen for one bus, regardless of whether twenty-four or thirty students travel. Museum admission costs 800 yen per student. In this classroom exercise, there are no other expenses and the school will divide the total equally among the participating students.
If thirty students take part, museum admission costs 24,000 yen in total. Adding the coach fee gives a total budget of 72,000 yen, or 2,400 yen per student. This amount is a planned cost under the stated assumptions, not a receipt proving that the school has already paid.
The teacher worries that six students might withdraw before the trip. If only twenty-four travel and the same coach is used, museum admission would cost 19,200 yen. The combined total would then be 67,200 yen, or 2,800 yen for each remaining student. The total would fall, but the per-student amount would rise because the unchanged bus fee would be shared among fewer students.
The school has not finalized the participant count, so it has not issued a final payment request. Families will receive an updated notice when numbers are confirmed. The teacher asks students not to confuse a quotation, a projected budget and a payment receipt.

FAQ
