survey人々の状況・意見を調べる調査全体conduct a survey of families

Reading

A secondary school wanted to know how students completed digital homework. It invited all pupils to answer an online questionnaire with twelve questions. The school called the larger project a survey, and teachers also interviewed a smaller group of students who had reported poor internet connections. The interviews revealed that some families could not download large files at home. The school introduced printed alternatives for those who needed them. However, teachers were careful not to claim that every student faced the same problem. They reported how many people had responded and noted that students who did not answer the questionnaire might have different experiences.

問37|Why were interviews used after the questionnaire?

To learn more about the experiences of students with poor internet access.

38|What limitation did the school report?

Students who did not respond might have different experiences.

A science club observed birds in the school garden each Friday. At the end of May, the students reported fewer birds than in April. Some members believed that a newly built fence had caused the decrease. Their teacher asked the group to check its observations more carefully. The weather was colder on several May mornings, and the club had also changed the time of its counts. The students repeated observations at comparable times and recorded temperature and rainfall. They prepared a short survey to ask nearby residents whether they had noticed changes in the garden, but they did not treat those opinions as direct measurements of bird numbers.

問39|Why were the first observations difficult to compare?

The weather and counting times differed between months.

40|Were residents’ opinions treated as direct measurements of the bird population?

No. The students distinguished survey responses from their observations.

A public library considered extending its Saturday learning sessions. First, staff used a questionnaire to ask visitors which subjects interested them. The survey showed strong demand for computer and language lessons among current visitors. The director then interviewed several parents whose children could not attend on Saturdays. These interviews revealed a problem that the first questionnaire had missed: some families lacked convenient transport at the proposed time. The library decided to test both an earlier morning session and a recorded lesson. During the trial, staff made direct observations of attendance and compared those numbers with feedback instead of assuming that a popular survey choice guaranteed successful participation.

問41|What did interviews reveal that the initial questionnaire had missed?

Transport difficulties for families unable to attend at the proposed time.

42|How did staff evaluate the trial?

They observed actual attendance and compared it with feedback.

A local museum was preparing an exhibition about its town in the 1930s. Curators interviewed older residents about places shown in historical photographs. They also examined building records and made detailed observations of signs visible in the photographs. One resident remembered a shop opening in 1931, but a public record suggested the building had opened several years later. The museum did not choose a date simply because the interview sounded convincing. Instead, the curators recorded the conflicting information and explained the uncertainty on the exhibition label. A small visitor questionnaire later showed that guests appreciated seeing how historians checked different types of evidence.

問43|Why did the curators avoid giving a definite opening year?

The interview and building records gave conflicting information.

44|What did the visitor questionnaire show?

Visitors valued the explanation of how evidence was checked.
