Some communities organize repair cafés where residents bring small household items and volunteers help examine them. The aim is to make people more familiar with repairing useful objects rather than immediately throwing them away. Supporters believe that these events could reduce waste and help participants learn practical skills. However, not every item can be repaired safely, and volunteers must explain which work requires professional assistance.

A local group ran three trial events. It counted the number of items brought in and recorded which repairs were completed. The group found that many simple problems could be fixed, but it did not follow every item after the event to see how long the repair lasted. Some visitors said the experience was worthwhile because they learned how their devices worked. Others asked for clearer instructions and longer sessions.

The organizers plan to review repair costs and safety reports before expanding the events. They also want to compare waste collection figures with earlier periods. However, the group has not yet established that the cafés caused a townwide reduction in waste, because many other factors may have changed during the same period.

問28|What is one aim of the repair cafés?

  1. To sell every damaged object immediately
  2. To replace all professional repair shops
  3. To guarantee repair of all items
  4. To help residents learn repairs and possibly reduce waste

問29|What did organizers record during the trials?

  1. The number of items and completed repairs
  2. Every household’s annual income
  3. All townwide disposal figures for ten years
  4. The life of every item after repair

問30|What was NOT followed for every repaired object?

  1. Its brand before arrival
  2. How long the repair continued to work afterward
  3. Whether staff attended the event
  4. The number of events

問31|Which broader outcome remains unproved?

  1. That repair cafés were organized
  2. That some visitors liked the events
  3. That the cafés caused a townwide decrease in waste
  4. That some repairs were completed

28:D(To help residents learn repairs and possibly reduce waste)。skills and waste reduction are aims, not guaranteed effects。

問29:A(The number of items and completed repairs)。number of items and completed repairs。

問30:B(How long the repair continued to work afterward)。durability after repair not systematically followed。

問31:C(That the cafés caused a townwide decrease in waste)。townwide causal effect unproven。

Some towns have introduced small libraries of musical instruments that residents can borrow for a short time. Supporters hope this will let children and adults try different kinds of music before buying expensive equipment. People may also discover new interests and practice with family members at home.

However, shared instruments need regular cleaning, inspection, and repairs. Some items can be damaged easily, and there may not be enough popular instruments for everyone. Staff must explain how to handle the equipment safely and record its condition when it is returned. These tasks take time and money.

Several towns are running trials and recording borrowing numbers. They also ask participants for feedback. Before expanding the programs, officials plan to compare costs and safety reports. They have not yet measured whether people continue studying music for longer because of the lending service.

Some towns are testing instrument-lending programs so residents can try music without buying expensive equipment. The programs may encourage new interests, but cleaning, repairs, safety checks, and limited supplies create challenges. Officials are collecting borrowing records and feedback before expansion, while long-term effects on people’s musical learning remain unmeasured.

TOPIC: Do you think schools should give students more opportunities to work with people in their communities?

I think schools should give students more opportunities to work with people in their communities. First, local projects could help students learn practical skills that are difficult to develop only through textbooks. For example, they might interview residents or assist at a public library. Second, working with different people may improve students’ communication and teamwork. However, schools need to ensure that activities are safe and appropriate for students’ ages. They should also avoid putting too much pressure on volunteers. I believe small projects with clear goals would be worthwhile. For these reasons, I support more community activities.
