Last spring, Greenford City Library stayed open for two extra hours on Saturdays during a three-month trial. Supporters hoped that the change would help families who were busy on weekdays. Library records showed an average of 220 Saturday visitors before the trial and 290 during it. Several parents said the later closing time made visits easier.

However, the records did not show why every visitor came. A popular reading festival began in the same month, and it may have attracted some visitors. Staff also reported higher electricity and staffing costs. The city has not decided whether the longer hours will become permanent.

Next month, the library will compare attendance on ordinary Saturdays and festival days. It will also ask visitors which hours they actually used. Officials say this information will help them decide whether the benefits are worth the extra costs.

問1|What is directly supported by the library records?

  1. Every visitor came because of the longer hours.
  2. Saturday visitor numbers increased during the trial.
  3. Electricity costs decreased during the trial.
  4. The city has permanently extended the hours.

問2|Which fact makes a simple cause-and-effect claim difficult?

  1. A reading festival began during the same period.
  2. The library was closed on weekdays.
  3. The city stopped counting visitors.
  4. All parents disliked the change.

問3|What does the city plan to examine next?

  1. Visitors’ favorite book genres only.
  2. The cost of building another library.
  3. Attendance on festival and ordinary Saturdays.
  4. The age of every book in the building.

問4|Which statement would overstate the findings?

  1. The trial lasted three months.
  2. Average Saturday visits rose from 220 to 290.
  3. Some families found visits easier.
  4. Longer hours alone caused all extra visits.

問5|Why has the city not made a final decision?

  1. The library cannot count visitors.
  2. Staff costs and possible benefits still need evaluation.
  3. Saturday visits fell to zero.
  4. The festival was cancelled.

問6|What is the passage mainly doing?

  1. Comparing library trial results with their limitations.
  2. Announcing a permanent nationwide policy.
  3. Arguing that festivals should end.
  4. Explaining how to borrow digital books.

1:B(Saturday visitor numbers increased during the trial.)。

2:A(A reading festival began during the same period.)。

3:C(Attendance on festival and ordinary Saturdays.)。

問4:D(Longer hours alone caused all extra visits.)。

5:B(Staff costs and possible benefits still need evaluation.)。

6:A(Comparing library trial results with their limitations.)。

North Valley School started a vegetable garden with thirty volunteers. Students planted tomatoes and herbs after class and kept short journals about their activities. At the end of the term, twenty-four volunteers answered a survey, and nineteen of those respondents said they had become more interested in environmental issues.

Some teachers described the results as encouraging. Nevertheless, the school did not survey students who had not joined the garden. The volunteers may already have been more interested in nature than other students. The survey also measured opinions, not changes in the amount of food waste at school.

During the next term, teachers plan to invite more students and measure how much food is thrown away in the cafeteria. They will ask both participants and nonparticipants about their interests. They hope this will provide a clearer picture of what the garden can and cannot achieve.

問7|Who were the nineteen students?

  1. Nineteen of the survey respondents.
  2. Nineteen of all teachers.
  3. All nonparticipants.
  4. Every student at the school.

問8|What important group was NOT surveyed?

  1. Students who joined the garden.
  2. Teachers who taught science.
  3. Students who did not join the garden.
  4. Students who kept journals.

問9|Which conclusion is NOT established?

  1. Some respondents reported stronger interest.
  2. Thirty students volunteered.
  3. The school collected survey responses.
  4. The garden reduced cafeteria food waste.

問10|Why might the volunteers be different from other students?

  1. They were required to join.
  2. They may have had greater interest in nature already.
  3. They never worked after school.
  4. They did not answer any questions.

問11|What is part of the next-term plan?

  1. Surveying both participants and nonparticipants.
  2. Replacing the cafeteria with a garden.
  3. Cancelling all student activities.
  4. Reporting that waste has reached zero.

問12|Which headline is the most accurate?

  1. School Garden Proves Food Waste Has Ended
  2. All Students Become Environmental Experts
  3. Volunteer Survey Suggests Interest but Leaves Questions
  4. School Garden Closed After Survey

7:A(Nineteen of the survey respondents.)。

8:C(Students who did not join the garden.)。

問9:D(The garden reduced cafeteria food waste.)。

10:B(They may have had greater interest in nature already.)。

11:A(Surveying both participants and nonparticipants.)。

問12:C(Volunteer Survey Suggests Interest but Leaves Questions)。

Three cafés in Lakeside Town began a reusable-cup program in June. Customers could pay a small deposit, borrow a cup, and receive their deposit back when they returned it. During the first six weeks, the cafés recorded 1,200 cup rentals. Managers said disposable-cup orders were lower than in the previous six weeks.

However, the weather had become warmer, and more people were buying cold drinks in their own bottles. Therefore, the managers could not say how much of the decrease was caused by the rental program. Some customers also reported that returning cups was inconvenient when they visited another neighborhood.

The cafés are considering more return locations. Before expanding the program, they plan to measure how often each cup is reused and how much washing and transport are required. The goal is to reduce waste, but the environmental impact has not yet been fully measured.

問13|How did customers get their deposits back?

  1. By buying a second drink.
  2. By returning the borrowed cup.
  3. By joining an online club.
  4. By paying a delivery fee.

問14|What is supported by the records?

  1. There were 1,200 rentals in six weeks.
  2. Every cup was used 1,200 times.
  3. All disposable-cup use stopped.
  4. The program was expanded nationwide.

問15|Why is the cause of lower disposable-cup orders uncertain?

  1. Cafés stopped recording orders.
  2. The program began in winter.
  3. Customers never brought bottles.
  4. Warmer weather and personal bottles were other possible factors.

問16|Which difficulty did some customers describe?

  1. Losing money whenever they returned cups.
  2. Not knowing the cafés’ opening hours.
  3. A lack of convenient return locations.
  4. Not being allowed to order cold drinks.

問17|What must the cafés still investigate?

  1. Cup reuse frequency and washing/transport needs.
  2. The names of every customer.
  3. Whether deposits are legal in all countries.
  4. How to stop selling reusable cups.

問18|Which statement stays within the evidence?

  1. The program has proven a total environmental benefit.
  2. Rental activity was recorded, but the full impact is not yet known.
  3. The program caused all reductions in disposable cups.
  4. Every customer found the returns convenient.

13:B(By returning the borrowed cup.)。

14:A(There were 1,200 rentals in six weeks.)。

15:D(Warmer weather and personal bottles were other possible factors.)。

16:C(A lack of convenient return locations.)。

17:A(Cup reuse frequency and washing/transport needs.)。

18:B(Rental activity was recorded, but the full impact is not yet known.)。

Eastwood Transit tested a phone app that sends messages when buses on five routes are delayed. The city operates twelve routes altogether. For eight weeks, the app was available to riders who chose to register. More than 600 people signed up, and many said the messages helped them plan their journeys.

The city later received 180 survey responses from registered users. Of these respondents, 126 said the app was useful. However, the survey did not include riders who had never registered, including people without smartphones. It also did not measure whether buses themselves arrived more punctually.

Transit officials now want to test messages at bus stops as well as on phones. They plan to compare how different groups receive information before deciding whether to introduce the service across all routes. The app provides information about delays; it does not directly prevent them.

問19|How many of the city’s routes used the app in the trial?

  1. All twelve routes.
  2. Only one route.
  3. Five routes.
  4. Seven routes.

問20|Which group supplied the 180 survey responses?

  1. All residents of Eastwood.
  2. People who had registered for the app.
  3. Riders without phones only.
  4. Bus drivers only.

問21|What was not measured?

  1. Whether buses became more punctual.
  2. How many people registered.
  3. Whether some users found messages useful.
  4. How many routes were tested.

問22|Why might the survey miss some needs?

  1. The service lasted many years.
  2. All respondents were children.
  3. The city has only five routes.
  4. Unregistered riders, including people without smartphones, were excluded.

問23|What will officials consider next?

  1. Removing every bus stop.
  2. Testing bus-stop messages alongside phone messages.
  3. Cancelling all routes.
  4. Sending notices only to drivers.

問24|What is the best supported conclusion?

  1. The app prevented every delay.
  2. All riders now receive delay messages.
  3. Some registered riders valued notices, but wider access needs study.
  4. Bus punctuality improved by 70 percent.

問19:C(Five routes.)。

20:B(People who had registered for the app.)。

21:A(Whether buses became more punctual.)。

22:D(Unregistered riders, including people without smartphones, were excluded.)。

問23:B(Testing bus-stop messages alongside phone messages.)。

24:C(Some registered riders valued notices, but wider access needs study.)。
