Reading Part 2|

1|Learning From Local Weather Records

Large weather agencies provide forecasts for broad regions, but the conditions at individual schools can be different from those at nearby stations. For example, a school surrounded by buildings may be warmer than a park a short distance away. Some schools have begun recording local temperature and rainfall to study these differences.

Students use simple instruments and record measurements at the same times each day. They learn how to organize data and notice changes over the seasons. (18), the records may help students understand why weather information from one location does not always describe conditions at another. Teachers encourage them to compare their observations with official records.

Reliable comparisons require consistent methods. If one thermometer is placed in direct sunlight while another is kept in the shade, their readings may differ for reasons unrelated to the area’s general temperature. (19), students are taught to check where instruments are placed and to record any changes in measurement conditions.

The project is useful for learning, but it cannot replace official weather alerts. School instruments may stop working or provide incomplete results. Teachers therefore ask students to confirm important information with reliable sources (20) making claims about dangerous weather.

説明文2|Creating Safer Routes to Public Spaces

Public spaces such as parks and community centers can improve life in a town. However, they are less useful if residents cannot reach them safely. Some roads near these facilities have narrow sidewalks, difficult crossings, or entrances that are hard to use for people with disabilities.

One town asked residents of different ages to describe the routes they used to reach a community center. The survey showed that some older residents avoided a steep path, while parents with young children worried about traffic at a particular crossing. (21), planners decided to examine walking routes before spending money on new facilities inside the center.

Improving access can involve several kinds of changes. The town considered better lighting, lower curbs, and clearer signs. Yet not every proposal was suitable for every location. (22), officials tested some changes temporarily and collected feedback instead of installing everything permanently at once.

After a trial period, the town measured whether more residents were able to reach the center comfortably. Planners also reviewed maintenance costs. They concluded that new features would be useful over time (23) the town could keep them safe and affordable to operate.

長文2|Article|Why Cities Are Testing Electric Mini-Buses

In some towns, ordinary buses are too large to travel easily along narrow residential streets. Older residents may have to walk long distances to reach the nearest main bus stop. To help with these problems, some local governments are testing small electric buses that can operate on shorter routes.

Supporters say the vehicles may improve access to shops, clinics, and public buildings. Because electric buses produce no exhaust from their engines while driving, they may also improve local air quality. However, operating them is not free. Charging equipment, driver wages, repairs, and electricity all cost money. The vehicles also need enough battery power to complete their journeys reliably.

One town began a six-month trial with two mini-buses. Officials collected information about the number of passengers, waiting times, and how often the vehicles arrived on schedule. They also asked residents whether the stops were easy to reach. Early feedback suggested that the service helped some people make short trips, but the buses were sometimes nearly empty in the middle of the day.

To improve the project, the town adjusted several departure times and provided a clearer route map. However, managers avoided claiming that the new vehicles would automatically reduce overall car use. A passenger might previously have walked or used another bus rather than driven. Measuring a change in car traffic would require additional evidence.

Researchers argue that long-term decisions should consider passenger access, operating costs, reliability, and environmental results together. A successful service does not necessarily need the greatest number of buses. It needs a route and timetable that serve residents’ actual needs while remaining affordable to operate.

問28

Why might mini-buses be useful in some towns?

  1. They eliminate the need for all public transport.
  2. They can serve streets that are difficult for large buses.
  3. They require no drivers or maintenance.
  4. They always carry more people than ordinary buses.

Writing|

Some schools are offering workshops where students learn practical digital skills, such as organizing files, creating clear presentations, and checking the reliability of online information. Supporters say these skills are useful for school assignments and may help students prepare for future work. For example, learning to check sources can prevent students from repeating false claims in reports.

However, workshops require time, trained teachers, and suitable devices. Not every student has a computer or a quiet place to practice at home. If schools simply add more online assignments, they may create unfair differences between students rather than improve learning.

To address these concerns, some schools provide shared devices during lessons and offer alternative ways to complete tasks. They also ask students for feedback and check whether their skills improve over time. Effective programs focus on meaningful learning instead of the number of technology-based activities.

Digital skills workshops can help students organize information, prepare presentations, and evaluate online sources. However, they require trained teachers, equipment, and fair access for students without suitable devices at home. Schools can provide shared resources, offer alternative tasks, and evaluate learning outcomes rather than simply increasing technology activities.

Writing|

TOPIC:Do you think local governments should create more places where teenagers can study after school?

I think local governments should create more places where teenagers can study after school. First, some students live in crowded homes and have difficulty finding a quiet place to concentrate. A public study room could give them a suitable environment without expensive fees. Second, these spaces could offer access to books and reliable internet, helping students complete assignments and explore new interests. Governments should ask young people what they need and consider maintenance costs before opening facilities. If the rooms are safe and easy to reach, they could support education throughout the community.
