長文1:Keeping a Town’s Walking Routes Safe
Many towns have created walking routes connecting parks, libraries, and shops. These routes encourage exercise and may reduce short car trips. However, a path that looks convenient on a map may have problems that planners do not see from their offices. Sidewalks can be slippery after rain, and some crossings are difficult for people with limited mobility.
To understand these problems, one town asked residents to describe their routes. Volunteers also visited the paths at different times and recorded observations. (18), the town discovered that a path considered safe in the daytime was poorly lit in the evening. Officials considered changes to signs, lighting, and crossings.
Not every improvement could be introduced immediately. The town had a limited budget and needed to keep routes open during construction. (19), planners started with temporary changes at two busy crossings. They collected comments before installing permanent equipment.
After the trial, residents generally reported feeling safer. However, the survey did not prove that traffic accidents had decreased. Officials planned to compare accident records over a longer period (20) making claims about actual improvements in safety.

2:Sharing School Equipment Responsibly
Some schools lend cameras, tablets, and laboratory tools to students for projects. These programs help families avoid buying expensive equipment for short-term use and give students access to activities they otherwise could not try.
Schools need clear rules. Equipment may be damaged, and electronic devices can contain personal information. Teachers explain safe tool use and require students to delete files before returning devices. (21), staff inspect equipment after each loan so problems can be found before it is lent again.
One school found that popular items were often unavailable near the end of term. Instead of immediately purchasing more equipment, it examined booking records. Some students had reserved devices but did not collect them. (22), the school introduced reminders and canceled reservations not collected within the agreed period.
Availability improved, but the school continued measuring repair costs and student satisfaction. The program would remain useful in the long term (23) enough people followed the rules and the school had resources to maintain the equipment.

長文1:E-mail|Neighborhood Learning Festival
To: Student Volunteers
From: Sarah Miller, Neighborhood Learning Festival Office
Subject: Schedule changes and equipment requests
Thank you for helping with the Neighborhood Learning Festival on Saturday, December 5. It will be held at the Riverside Community Center. We originally planned to open the outdoor area at 10:00 a.m., but maintenance on a nearby path will continue until 10:30. Outdoor activities will begin at 11:00. Indoor presentations will still start at 9:30 as planned.
Volunteers should report to the information desk by 9:00 for name cards and emergency instructions. The center will provide tables and normal electrical outlets. Teams needing special cables must submit a request by November 27. An automatic email will confirm that a request has arrived, but it does not mean the equipment has been approved. A separate approval message will be sent after the safety team’s review.
Visitors may watch demonstrations, but only registered students and staff who have completed safety training may operate the equipment. Families are welcome to attend. Those who require an accessible entrance should contact the center by December 1.
Teams wishing to change their presentation times should contact the office by November 30. Later requests may be refused because the printed program and staff schedule will already be prepared.

長文2:Article|The Challenges of Community Composting
Some towns collect food scraps from households and turn them into compost for parks and gardens. Composting can reduce organic waste sent to disposal sites and create useful material that improves soil. Supporters also say the programs help residents learn about the environment.
However, collecting food waste is more difficult than simply placing bins around a neighborhood. Plastic packaging or unsuitable materials may be mixed into the scraps, requiring workers to separate them. In warm weather, bins may produce smells unless they are emptied and cleaned frequently. Clear instructions and reliable collection schedules are necessary.
One town tested compost collection in three neighborhoods. Staff recorded household participation, usable material collected, and additional cleaning needs. Surprisingly, the neighborhood with the most bins did not produce the greatest amount of useful compost. Clear signs and convenient collection times seemed to influence participation more strongly.
Composting also needs energy, space, and trained workers. Researchers warn that benefits should be measured across the whole process, including collection and transport. The number of installed bins alone cannot prove that waste has been reduced.
After reviewing its trial, the town adjusted collection times and provided clear guides to acceptable materials. Officials planned to monitor costs and compost quality for a longer period before expanding. They wanted a program that was useful for residents and affordable to operate.
問28
What is a potential benefit of composting?
- It eliminates all waste.
- It can turn food scraps into useful soil material.
- It stops pollution immediately.
- It requires no transportation.
B:It can turn food scraps into useful soil material.。scraps → compost improving soil。
Why can unsuitable material cause problems?
- It strengthens the compost.
- It makes cleaning unnecessary.
- It guarantees more participants.
- Workers need extra time separating it.
D:Workers need extra time separating it.。plastic/unsuitable materials need separating。
What did the three-neighborhood trial suggest?
- Clear guidance and convenient times can matter more than the number of bins.
- Participation does not need measurement.
- More bins always mean more compost.
- Everyone prefers the same time.
A:Clear guidance and convenient times can matter more than the number of bins.。most bins not equal most compost; signage and times matter。
How should the town judge expansion?
- By counting installed bins only.
- By adding as many bins as possible.
- By considering useful output, safety, and operating costs.
- By assuming transport has no environmental impact.
C:By considering useful output, safety, and operating costs.。cost, quality and long-term viable operation。

Writing Part 4|
Some communities have opened shared study rooms in public buildings. Students can use desks, internet connections, and books without paying for private workspaces. These facilities help people with limited space at home and may offer short training sessions to learners of different ages.
However, shared rooms require staff, cleaning, electricity, and regular maintenance. Popular rooms fill quickly, while some users reserve desks but never arrive. Such unused reservations prevent others from using limited space. Organizers must also make rooms accessible to people with different needs.
To improve the service, communities can limit reservation times and release desks when users do not arrive. They ask visitors for feedback and measure costs before adding more rooms. The aim is to support learning while using public resources responsibly.
Community study rooms offer affordable space, internet, and learning resources, helping people who lack suitable facilities at home. However, maintenance costs, limited capacity, and unused reservations can reduce their value. Organizers can improve access by managing bookings, gathering feedback, and evaluating costs before expanding these services.
Writing Part 5|
TOPIC:Do you think schools should encourage students to take part in local environmental projects?
I think schools should encourage students to join local environmental projects. First, students can understand science more deeply by observing real conditions. For example, measuring water quality in a nearby stream can show how weather and human activities affect nature. Second, working with residents can develop communication and teamwork skills. Students learn to explain their findings and listen to different opinions. However, schools should choose safe activities and help students check their data before making claims. With proper guidance, these projects can connect classroom learning with practical experience and help students become more responsible members of their communities.
