Several towns have been examining ways to improve paths used by people walking to schools, shops, and public facilities. In one town, staff measured the width and condition of sidewalks along a busy street. They also asked residents which routes were difficult to use, especially for people pushing strollers or using wheelchairs.
Some residents suggested removing parking spaces to make the paths wider. Shop owners, however, were concerned about the effect on deliveries. The town then tested a temporary arrangement using removable barriers during certain hours. The trial allowed officials to observe how pedestrians and vehicles used the space without permanently rebuilding the street.
During the first week, staff recorded fewer cases of pedestrians stepping into the road. However, the weather was mild and the number of delivery vehicles was lower than usual. For that reason, officials said the result alone did not prove the arrangement would work equally well in every season.
The town plans to repeat observations on busier days and consult local businesses before deciding whether to make the changes permanent. Construction costs and emergency vehicle access will also be considered. No final design has been approved.
問28:Why did the town use removable barriers?
- To observe how a temporary layout worked
- To close every shop permanently
- To stop all emergency vehicles
- To avoid talking with residents
A:To observe how a temporary layout worked。temporary arrangement … observe how pedestrians and vehicles used space。
問29:Why could the first week’s results be misleading?
- No pedestrians were observed
- Weather and delivery traffic were unusual
- The barriers were permanent
- All shops were closed
B:Weather and delivery traffic were unusual。weather mild / delivery vehicles lower than usual。
問30:What concern did some shop owners raise?
- Too many libraries
- Lack of school uniforms
- Access for deliveries
- The color of the barriers
C:Access for deliveries。concerned about the effect on deliveries。
問31:What is true of the final street design?
- It has already been built
- All residents approved it
- The costs have been ignored
- It has not yet been approved
D:It has not yet been approved。No final design has been approved。
Writing|
Some community centers lend portable projectors to residents who organize educational events. The devices can help groups show photographs and other materials without buying expensive equipment. Staff also provide basic instructions about safe setup and cables.
However, lending equipment requires regular checks, cleaning, and repair costs. The number of projectors is limited, so groups sometimes need to reserve them in advance. Organizers must also be careful when displaying photographs containing other people’s personal information.
One center plans to compare borrowing demand and maintenance expenses after six months. It hopes to purchase additional projectors, but has not decided whether the benefits will justify the cost.
Some community centers lend projectors to groups holding educational events, helping them avoid equipment purchases. Staff provide safety guidance. However, projectors require maintenance, advance reservations, and care with personal information. One center plans to compare demand and repair costs after six months before deciding whether purchasing more devices is worthwhile.

TOPIC: Do you think schools should offer more opportunities for students to learn traditional local skills?
I think schools should offer more opportunities to learn traditional local skills. First, these activities can help students understand the history of their communities. For example, local craftspeople could demonstrate traditional weaving or woodworking techniques. Second, learning practical skills may encourage students to value careful work and cooperation. Students could complete small projects in groups and explain what they learned. However, schools should choose age-appropriate activities and provide safety guidance. Such lessons would complement regular subjects and give students another way to connect classroom learning with their local environment.
