英検2級の長文では、apply(申請する)・be approved(承認される)・book(予約を確定する)・attend(実際に参加する)を同じ出来事として読んではいけません。

The city library introduced a small research room for students working on group projects. Interested students first submit an online application explaining the topic and the number of participants. The library then reviews whether the project follows its rules. Submitting the application does not guarantee that a room will be available.

During the first month, 120 groups applied. Staff approved 85 applications, but only 70 groups completed the separate booking step before the deadline. Some approved groups did not choose a time, while others decided to meet online instead. The library has not measured how many students actually attended the booked sessions.

Staff plan to simplify the booking page and send clearer reminders. They believe these changes may reduce unfinished bookings, but the library will compare data after the new system begins before claiming that the changes were effective.

A school launched a short exchange program with a partner school abroad. Students who wanted to join submitted a short essay and a consent form from a parent or guardian. Teachers then interviewed applicants to learn about their motivation and ability to communicate respectfully. The school emphasized that an interview invitation did not mean final acceptance.

Sixty students applied for 24 available places. The school invited 35 to interviews and offered places to 24. However, four selected students later declined their offers because the travel dates conflicted with family events. The school contacted students on a waiting list to fill the vacancies, but it has not announced how many of them accepted.

The organizers hope to publish a guide explaining the selection stages for future applicants. They will also ask participants about their experiences after the trip. No claims have been made that the program has improved students’ language scores.
