Reading Part 2|

1|Why Some Schools Lend Science Equipment

Schools sometimes lend microscopes, sensors, and other tools to students who want to carry out projects at home. Borrowing can give more students a chance to investigate questions without asking their families to buy expensive equipment. It may also encourage students to try scientific activities that they have never considered before.

One school began by lending simple measuring devices. During the first week, every available device was booked, partly because the project had been announced at a special assembly. Later, demand became more regular. (18), the school recorded how often each type of equipment was actually used instead of assuming that the first week’s reservations represented permanent demand.

The school discovered that some students were unsure how to use the equipment safely. A few devices came back with missing parts, and others needed new batteries. (19), teachers introduced a short demonstration before each student’s first loan and checked the contents of every kit after it was returned.

Now the school is considering buying additional equipment. Before it does so, staff will compare borrowing patterns with repair expenses and the amount of time needed for supervision. They will expand the service (20) it can be maintained without reducing support for other learning activities.

長文2|Local History Interviews and Reliable Archives

Community groups sometimes interview older residents to learn about how local shops, streets, and festivals have changed. Recordings of personal memories can provide valuable details that official documents do not include. Some museums store these interviews so that students can learn about their town’s history.

However, memories are not always exact. People may confuse the year of an event or combine two similar experiences into one story. (21), students working on an archive should compare important dates with newspapers, photographs, and other records rather than presenting every recollection as a confirmed fact.

Permission is also important. A person who agrees to an interview may not expect their words to be posted on an unrestricted public website. (22), organizers explain how recordings will be used and record the participant’s choices before deciding whether to publish them.

Finally, digital files need backups, and descriptions may require correction when new evidence appears. The museum will add interviews to its public collection (23) it has trained staff to protect the recordings and respect participants’ privacy.

長文1|E-mail|Youth Innovation Fair: Updated Instructions

To: Student Project Teams

From: Youth Innovation Center

Subject: Room change and equipment requests for the fair

Thank you for registering for our innovation fair on Saturday, June 12. The public program will begin at 10:30 a.m. We originally planned to use the second-floor computer room, but the lift beside that room is undergoing repairs. Presentations will instead take place in the ground-floor exhibition hall. The date and public opening time have not changed.

Team representatives should arrive by 9:20 to collect identification cards and receive safety instructions. Display tables and ordinary power outlets will be supplied. If your group needs special cables, a projector, or electronic sensors, submit a request by June 4. The automatic email only confirms that your request was received; a separate technical approval will follow an inspection.

Only registered presenters and approved supervisors may operate powered equipment. Visitors are welcome to watch and ask questions in the marked area. If presentations include photographs or recordings of other people, teams must make sure the appropriate permissions cover public display, rather than relying on permission given for schoolwork alone.

Please inform the office by June 7 if you need to change the number of presenters. We cannot guarantee later changes because staff supervision and room arrangements must be planned in advance. A final schedule will be emailed to all teams on June 9.

長文2|Article|Measuring the Value of Public Cooling Spaces

During very hot summers, some towns open public buildings as places where residents can spend time in cooler conditions. Libraries and community halls may offer seating, drinking water, and information about staying safe in high temperatures. Such services can be particularly useful for people who have difficulty keeping their homes cool.

One town extended the opening hours of a community hall during a hot week. At first, the project seemed extremely popular because the hall was crowded on the first day. However, a free local concert was also taking place there. Staff therefore counted how many people returned on ordinary days and asked whether they had come mainly for the cooling space or for another activity.

Officials also examined accessibility. Some older residents had trouble reaching the building because the nearest bus service stopped early. The town adjusted its information signs to show other transport options and provided telephone advice for residents without smartphones. It did not assume that online announcements reached every person who might benefit.

The cooling space required electricity, cleaning, staff, and regular checks of the air-conditioning system. Managers compared these expenses with attendance and the experiences reported by visitors. They also recorded periods when the building was unavailable for safety inspections so that the published data would not suggest that it had been open continuously.

After the trial, the town decided to continue the program during the hottest periods while collecting more evidence. Officials emphasized that counting visitors was not enough to prove that the space had prevented heat-related illness. Its value needed to be considered alongside access, reliable operation, cost, and feedback from residents.

問28

Why was the first day’s crowd not reliable evidence of usual demand?

  1. A free concert was taking place at the hall.
  2. The cooling equipment had stopped working.
  3. Most people were prevented from entering.
  4. The building was normally a sports stadium.

  1. They did not understand any signs.
  2. The nearest bus service ended too early.
  3. They needed to buy new smartphones.
  4. The hall had no seats.

B:The nearest bus service ended too early.。bus stopped early and made reaching hall difficult。

Why did managers record safety-inspection closures?

  1. To advertise additional concerts.
  2. To count more visitors.
  3. To prevent the data from implying uninterrupted opening.
  4. To avoid reporting maintenance expenses.

C:To prevent the data from implying uninterrupted opening.。closure periods recorded so the service wasn’t falsely shown continuously available。

問31

What does the article conclude about evaluating cooling spaces?

  1. The number of first-day visitors is sufficient.
  2. Costs do not matter for public services.
  3. Telephone advice should be removed.
  4. Access, operation, costs, and visitor experiences all matter.

D:Access, operation, costs, and visitor experiences all matter.。final paragraph multi-factor evaluation and no illness-causation claim。

Writing Part 4|

Some communities are creating shared bicycle-repair spaces where residents can borrow tools and receive advice on basic maintenance. This can help people avoid buying equipment they use only occasionally and may encourage them to keep bicycles in service longer.

However, tools need inspection and replacement when damaged. Workshops also require trained supervisors, storage space, and clear rules because some repairs, particularly those involving complex electric components, can be dangerous. The service may become crowded during busy seasons.

To manage these problems, organizers teach safe tool use, book repair tables in advance, and direct hazardous work to qualified technicians. They record operating costs, demand, and completed repairs before deciding whether to expand the service.

Shared bicycle-repair spaces help residents maintain bicycles without purchasing rarely used tools. However, equipment requires inspections, supervision, storage, and safety rules, while popular sessions may become crowded. Organizers can teach safe use, manage bookings, refer dangerous repairs to professionals, and measure costs and outcomes before expanding.

Writing Part 5|

TOPIC:Do you think schools should offer more opportunities for students to learn practical repair skills?

I think schools should teach more practical repair skills. First, learning to fix simple items can reduce unnecessary spending and waste. For example, students could repair a torn bag instead of buying a replacement. Second, repair projects help students become more confident in solving everyday problems. They must inspect an issue, select suitable tools, and check the result. However, safety is essential. Teachers should limit activities to age-appropriate tasks and refer dangerous electrical repairs to qualified professionals. With careful guidance, practical lessons can help students use resources responsibly and develop useful independence.
