Cities with popular tourist districts are increasingly using anonymous location data to estimate crowd levels. A local authority may examine patterns from mobile devices to identify hours when streets appear busiest. In one hypothetical pilot, the method helped planners notice that crowding was concentrated around two transport stops rather than distributed evenly across the old town. Officials initially considered building another pedestrian route. However, they soon recognized that information collected from phones represented only part of the people visiting the area.
Some visitors did not carry connected devices, and others had disabled location sharing. The analysis also could not establish why people remained in a particular place. A long stay near a train station might reflect a delayed service rather than an interest in nearby attractions. Furthermore, even a reliable measure of crowd density would not show how residents felt about noise, litter or access to their own homes. Treating a large volume of location records as complete evidence of community well-being could therefore lead to misleading conclusions.
The city proposed combining several sources before making permanent changes. Observers would count pedestrians at different times, transport providers would share service information, and residents could report recurring problems. Planners would compare possible measures such as clearer visitor guidance, better bus coordination and temporary changes to walking routes. They would also consider privacy and make sure that the data were not used to track specific individuals. The goal was to identify interventions that actually improved access and comfort, rather than assuming that gathering more digital information would automatically solve the problem.
Q1. What did the pilot initially reveal?
- (A) Crowding was concentrated near particular transport stops.
- (B) All visitors shared their device locations.
- (C) Visitor numbers were already falling.
- (D) The town had no transport problems.
Q2. Why was the phone data insufficient?
- (A) It precisely explained every visitor’s motivation.
- (B) It excluded some visitors and lacked information about the reasons for staying.
- (C) It was obtained only from residents.
- (D) It established that pedestrian routes caused the crowds.
Q3. Which statement is supported?
- (A) A large dataset always reflects residents’ experiences.
- (B) A new route was built immediately.
- (C) Resident reports and transport information could complement device data.
- (D) Privacy was considered irrelevant.
Q4. What was the authority’s ultimate approach?
- (A) Ban all mobile data gathering.
- (B) Replace every existing street.
- (C) Track named individuals to reduce crowds.

A regional transport company proposed replacing part of its diesel bus fleet with electric vehicles. Supporters emphasized that electric buses can reduce certain emissions during operation, especially when their electricity comes from relatively clean sources. They also pointed to quieter streets and the possibility of lower maintenance needs for some vehicle components. The company therefore announced a limited trial on two routes with predictable daily distances, rather than committing to an immediate replacement of every bus.
The trial raised practical questions. Some vehicles needed charging during periods when the company previously used the depot for maintenance. A route that looked efficient on a timetable occasionally took much longer when roads were congested, leaving less time to recharge. Electricity prices and the condition of the local power network could also influence operating costs. Officials were careful not to assume that a vehicle’s purchase price or a single month’s energy bill could reveal the entire cost of operating the service over many years.
To learn from the trial, the company planned to compare reliability, total operating costs and passenger service levels. It would also discuss charging arrangements with the local electricity provider. Critics accepted the potential environmental benefits but asked whether investment in new vehicles might reduce money available for routes serving remote communities. The company responded that expansion should proceed only where performance and financial plans supported it. The central question was not simply whether electric buses were desirable in principle, but how to introduce them without undermining access to public transportation.
Q5. Why did the company start with only two routes?
- (A) It wanted a limited trial with predictable distances.
- (B) It had proven all routes could be converted immediately.
- (C) It intended to end all rural transport.
- (D) It believed fuel prices would never change.
Q6. Which factor could complicate daily operation?
- (A) All routes had exactly the same duration.
- (B) No charging equipment was needed.
- (C) Congestion reduced the time available for charging.
- (D) Electric buses could never run on busy routes.
Q7. What financial mistake does the passage warn against?
- (A) Considering passenger needs.
- (B) Treating a purchase price or brief energy bill as total long-term cost.
- (C) Measuring vehicle reliability.
- (D) Consulting electricity providers.
Q8. How did critics and the company differ?
- (A) Critics rejected all environmental benefits.
- (B) The company ruled out further trials.
- (C) Critics demanded immediate replacement everywhere.
- (D) Critics worried about the effect on other routes, while the company favored evidence-based expansion.
Several communities have established programs to teach languages that fewer young people use at home. Some lessons take place in schools, while others are organized by local cultural groups and older speakers. Supporters argue that classes can give children an opportunity to hear stories, learn everyday expressions and understand historical traditions. In one illustrative program, registrations rose after teaching materials became available online, encouraging organizers to offer more introductory courses.
However, rising registration figures did not necessarily mean that the language was being used more often outside lessons. Some participants completed a course without finding people with whom they could speak regularly. Others learned vocabulary but lacked confidence in unscripted conversations. Community members also pointed out that the variety of language used in formal textbooks might differ from expressions common in local families. A program that measured only enrollment could overlook these barriers to actual communication.
The organizers began developing opportunities for learners to use the language in meaningful settings. They invited speakers to lead storytelling sessions, encouraged families to contribute familiar expressions and created small discussion groups for different ages. Teachers would still monitor attendance and vocabulary progress, but they also wanted to observe whether participants could sustain conversations and whether local speakers felt that the materials represented their community accurately. The organizers recognized that such outcomes might take time to develop and that no single teaching approach would meet everyone’s needs. Their aim was to connect formal learning with everyday use, rather than declaring success solely because more people signed up.
Q9. What initially encouraged organizers to offer more courses?
- (A) Every family had begun using the language daily.
- (B) Registration increased after online materials became available.
- (C) Textbooks had replaced community speakers.
- (D) Participants stopped attending schools.
Q10. Why might enrollment be a misleading indicator?
- (A) Language use outside class may remain limited.
- (B) Enrollment always reduces language ability.
- (C) Local speakers have no role.
- (D) All learners become fluent immediately.
Q11. What concern did community members raise?
- (A) No vocabulary could be taught.
- (B) Online materials were necessarily harmful.
- (C) Textbook language might differ from familiar local expressions.
- (D) Children could not hear any stories.
Q12. What was the purpose of new discussion groups?
- (A) Count registrations without assessing outcomes.
- (B) Replace all local speakers with software.
- (C) Guarantee fluency in one week.
- (D) Connect classroom learning with real opportunities to communicate.
