結論:英検1級の科学・社会問題の長文では、preprint(プレプリント)・peer review(査読)・systematic review(系統的レビュー)・meta-analysis(メタ分析)が同じ意味ではないことを理解する必要があります。

  • Peer review:
  • Systematic review:

Paragraph 1:A fictional university team published a preprint evaluating temporary cooling rooms opened in public buildings during a summer heat period. The draft reported that visits to the rooms had increased and that many respondents considered the spaces convenient. Local media quickly presented the results as evidence that the program had substantially reduced heat-related harm. Yet the researchers’ own manuscript made a narrower claim: the data recorded attendance and survey responses, not the total health outcomes of residents who had and had not used the rooms.

Paragraph 2:Other researchers raised concerns about the sample. People who visited a cooling room were more likely to see the survey invitation, while residents unable to reach a building were missing from the feedback. The team acknowledged that its early figures could not establish whether the most vulnerable groups had gained effective access. It revised the public draft to explain those limits more clearly, but that revision did not itself provide new evidence about excluded residents.

Paragraph 3:The authors later submitted the work for journal review. Reviewers requested a more explicit explanation of how repeated visits were counted and whether neighborhood transport conditions might influence the apparent results. These questions did not prove that the data were fabricated. Instead, they concerned the relationship between the measured activity and the broader policy claim. The team arranged additional analyses and asked the municipality to compare unique users, travel barriers, and reliable access to suitable assistance.

Paragraph 4:The municipal council decided to keep the cooling rooms open during another limited trial rather than promise a permanent expansion. The researchers welcomed that decision while emphasizing that a useful public program should be evaluated by practical protection and access, not solely by how many visits it generates.

Q1:What did the university’s initial preprint actually measure?

  • (A) Confirmed reductions in all heat-related illness.
  • (B) The long-term health outcomes of every nonuser.
  • (C) Visits and survey responses rather than comprehensive protection outcomes.
  • (D) The exact cost of permanent expansion in every district.

Q2:What was the effect of revising the preprint?

  • (A) It made the limitations clearer without automatically creating new evidence.
  • (B) It proved that the original data had been fabricated.
  • (C) It established that every vulnerable resident was protected.
  • (D) It completed every aspect of journal peer review.

Q3:Why did peer reviewers ask about repeated visits and transport conditions?

  • (A) They wanted to ban surveys of public services.
  • (B) They required all cooling rooms to close immediately.
  • (C) They believed the number of visits had fallen to zero.
  • (D) They questioned whether recorded activity supported a wider policy claim.

Q4:What did the council ultimately approve?

  • (A) A permanent national program.
  • (B) Continuation of a limited trial with further evaluation.
  • (C) The withdrawal of every published record.
  • (D) Unrestricted medical claims based on attendance.

Paragraph 1:A fictional research network prepared a systematic review of courses intended to improve practical technical skills. It established an explicit search strategy and criteria for including studies before examining the results. Some of the identified projects used randomized assignment, while others compared people who had voluntarily enrolled with those who had not. The review team considered both types of evidence but recorded their different limitations. Finding several publications on the same topic did not mean that all of them measured comparable outcomes.

Paragraph 2:One group of studies used standardized practical assessments, another reported only course completion, and several measured employment months later. The investigators initially considered calculating one combined estimate of program effectiveness. A statistical adviser objected that an average combining these different results might be misleading. Higher completion, improved skills, and later employment were related but not interchangeable measures, and the studies differed in population and methods.

Paragraph 3:The reviewers therefore decided to present a structured account of the evidence rather than force every result into one meta-analysis. They examined the quality of the study designs, possible confounding, follow-up losses, and uncertainty. In a small subset of sufficiently comparable studies, a separate numerical synthesis remained under consideration. The absence of one overall combined figure did not mean the systematic review had failed; it reflected a decision to avoid treating unlike outcomes as equivalent.

Paragraph 4:Policymakers welcomed the review but initially focused on the few projects reporting the largest benefits. The authors cautioned that favorable examples should not automatically determine funding decisions. They recommended asking which learners had been included, how skills were assessed, and whether the program could be operated sustainably in different communities. A proposed expansion would require evidence suited to those practical questions, not simply a long list of positive studies.

Q5:What distinguished the systematic review’s approach?

  • (A) It selected only the most favorable studies after observing the results.
  • (B) It used stated search and inclusion methods and assessed limitations of different studies.
  • (C) It combined every reported number without considering outcomes.
  • (D) It assumed that all course participants had been randomly assigned.

Q6:Why was a single meta-analysis considered problematic?

  • (A) The network had no published studies at all.
  • (B) The statistical adviser opposed all quantitative methods.
  • (C) Every intervention had failed.
  • (D) The underlying studies measured different outcomes and used different methods.

Q7:What did the absence of a single combined effect indicate?

  • (A) The reviewers avoided combining outcomes that were not sufficiently comparable.
  • (B) The systematic review had necessarily failed.
  • (C) All studies had reported the same result.
  • (D) All training benefits were conclusively disproved.

Q8:What did the authors recommend for policy decisions?

  • (A) Fund only studies reporting the largest effects.
  • (B) Automatically adopt every training course.
  • (C) Examine participant groups, skill assessment, and sustainable operation before expansion.
  • (D) Use publication counts as the sole success indicator.
