Had the equipment not been installed, …

仮定法と倒置を学んだら時系列の倒置へ:no sooner had・hardly had・not until didの独自32例。

  • If X had happened, Y would have happened:過去の事実と異なる仮定を表す典型的な形。
  • Had X happened, …:If X had happenedの倒置。
  • Were X to happen, …:
  • even if / only if / provided that:譲歩・必要条件・実施条件を残して読む。

Paragraph 1:The fictional town of Alderbrook introduced new river-level sensors after several storms had disrupted public services. The sensors sent alerts to a central team when water rose quickly. During the first season, staff responded to several warnings, and officials welcomed the faster flow of information. However, the records did not establish how much damage the equipment had actually prevented.

Paragraph 2:A council member argued that, had the sensors not been installed, the town would have suffered severe losses. An independent evaluator replied that this was a counterfactual claim, not an observed result. The town had not experienced the same storm twice, once with and once without the sensors. Although the equipment might have helped, differences in rainfall, local drainage, and residents’ behavior limited what could be concluded from the available evidence.

Paragraph 3:The evaluator also considered future expansion. Were the town to add sensors in remote valleys, it would need reliable communications and trained staff to respond to alerts. Without those conditions, additional equipment could generate warnings that no one was able to act on. The evaluator supported testing a small number of new locations, provided that the emergency team could assess false alerts and response times.

Paragraph 4:The council therefore approved a limited trial rather than a permanent expansion of the entire network. Its evaluation would distinguish recorded alerts, completed responses, and harm actually prevented. The town could not observe every outcome that would have occurred under alternative conditions, but it could avoid describing a plausible benefit as a proven fact.

Q1:What is the main problem with the council member’s claim?

  • (A) It was a counterfactual assertion not directly established by observed outcomes.
  • (B) It referred only to storms that had never occurred.
  • (C) It proved that sensors had no possible benefit.
  • (D) It relied on an official experiment with identical storms.

Q2:What does ‘had the sensors not been installed’ mean?

  • (A) The sensors were removed before the storm.
  • (B) Installing sensors was prohibited by law.
  • (C) If the sensors had not been installed.
  • (D) The sensors will be installed next year.

Q3:What did the evaluator say about the equipment’s benefits?

  • (A) It certainly prevented every possible loss.
  • (B) It may have helped, but the size of any prevented damage was uncertain.
  • (C) It had failed to send any useful alert.
  • (D) It was the only factor affecting storm outcomes.

Q4:What would remote-valley expansion require?

  • (A) Only purchasing a greater number of devices.
  • (B) A guarantee that every storm would be harmless.
  • (C) Removing all trained responders.
  • (D) Reliable communication and trained staff.

Q5:Which action was actually approved?

  • (A) A permanent expansion to every valley.
  • (B) The complete cancellation of the project.
  • (C) A limited trial with evaluation of responses.
  • (D) Unconditional installation without staffing.

Q6:What is the best summary of the final paragraph?

  • (A) Officials should distinguish recorded activity from proven outcomes when evaluating a trial.
  • (B) Every additional sensor necessarily reduces losses.
  • (C) Counterfactual questions must never be considered in policy.
  • (D) The council had already established an exact amount of harm avoided.

Paragraph 1:A fictional regional clinic introduced remote consultations for patients who found travel difficult. During the trial, appointment requests increased, and patients who completed consultations often reported that the service was convenient. Administrators described the response as encouraging, but the evaluation team warned that convenience among users was not the same as improved care for everyone in the region.

Paragraph 2:Some residents still lacked reliable connections, while others needed physical examinations that could not be conducted remotely. The clinic considered what might have happened if the same resources had instead been used to extend staffed transport services. This alternative had not been tested, so neither option’s comparative benefit could be determined from existing data. Even if online consultations reduced some travel, they would not necessarily replace every in-person service.

Paragraph 3:Had the clinic restricted appointments exclusively to online users, certain patients might have been excluded. For that reason, staff proposed retaining telephone assistance and some face-to-face appointments. They also recommended tracking completed consultations, unresolved problems, and whether patients could obtain appropriate follow-up care. The proposal was not to guarantee medical improvement for all patients, but to test whether different channels met different practical needs.

Paragraph 4:The governing committee agreed to continue the mixed model for another period, provided that staffing and privacy requirements could be met. It did not approve an online-only service or claim that a hypothetical alternative had been disproved. The evaluation would remain open to revision as stronger evidence became available.

Q7:What did the increase in appointment requests demonstrate?

  • (A) All patients in the region received better healthcare.
  • (B) The clinic had abandoned in-person care.
  • (C) Remote consultations had eliminated travel difficulties permanently.
  • (D) Interest or demand, without proving better care for all residents.

Q8:What is the status of extending staffed transport instead of remote consultations?

  • (A) It was already tested and found ineffective.
  • (B) It was a hypothetical alternative that had not been evaluated.
  • (C) It had permanently replaced remote consultations.
  • (D) It was approved for every patient.

Q9:What does ‘Even if online consultations reduced some travel’ imply?

  • (A) Some travel might be reduced, but in-person services could still be necessary.
  • (B) Remote consultations were proved to replace every physical examination.
  • (C) The service was never used.
  • (D) Patients would not need any follow-up care.

Q10:Why did staff recommend keeping several service channels?

  • (A) To make every appointment more expensive.
  • (B) To prevent any patient from consulting remotely.
  • (C) To accommodate patients with different access and care needs.
  • (D) To close the clinic permanently.

Q11:Which decision did the committee actually make?

  • (A) Unconditional adoption of an online-only system.
  • (B) Complete cancellation of all remote consultation.
  • (C) Permanent elimination of transport services.
  • (D) Continuation of a mixed service model subject to staffing and privacy conditions.

Q12:Which claim would misrepresent the final conclusion?

  • (A) Officials would revise their approach if evidence changed.
  • (B) The alternative transport model had been definitively disproved.
  • (C) Some consultations still required in-person support.
  • (D) Different channels could serve different needs.

FAQ

Had the data been available

even ifとeven thoughは同じ意味ですか?

通常even ifは仮定、even thoughは認める事実の譲歩に用います。
