英語のbesideとbesidesは末尾のsが1文字違うだけですが、基本の意味が異なります。beside＝物理的に「〜の隣」、besides＝「〜のほかに・さらに」という区別です。The chair is beside the window.なら椅子が窓の隣にある一方、Besides English, I study French.なら英語に加えてフランス語も勉強しているという意味です。慶英会では空所補充25問、誤文訂正10問、和文英訳5問を独自に制作し、すべての解答と理由を無料公開します。
besidesには名詞のほかにbesides studyingのような動名詞を続ける用法があり、文頭ではBesides, …という接続副詞にもなります。さらにbeside the point（的外れ）、be beside oneself（感情が非常に強い）という慣用表現もあります。本記事は英検・NEW TREASUREなどの学校英語の双方に応用できる補助教材ですが、公式過去問や教科書本文を転載したものではありません。

beside・besidesの違い【品詞・意味の早見表】

物理的な位置ならbeside：next toと近い
The station is beside the museum.は駅が博物館の隣にあるという位置関係です。next to the museumに言い換えられます。場所の説明にbesidesを使うと、隣接ではなく「その博物館のほかに」という追加に解釈される可能性があります。
追加ならbesides：名詞と動名詞を続ける
Besides English, she studies Spanish.は英語のほかスペイン語も勉強する文です。Besides reading novels, he writes stories.なら小説を読むほかに執筆も行う意味です。besidesは前置詞として名詞・動名詞を後ろに置きます。
文頭のBesides, は理由を一つ増やす
I cannot join the event. Besides, I have an exam tomorrow.のBesides,は「それに、明日試験がある」と別の理由を加えます。接続副詞として文頭で使う際はコンマを置くのが一般的です。
beside the point・beside oneselfは直訳しない
That remark is beside the point.は「その発言は論点から外れている」という意味です。She was beside herself with worry.は心配のあまり我を忘れる状態。物理的な「隣」だけで訳すと意味が不自然になるため、こうした定型句はひとまとまりで覚えます。
besidesとexceptの違い
基本的にbesidesは追加、exceptは除外を表します。Who else is coming besides Mei?ならメイに加えて誰が来るのかという質問です。Who is coming except Mei?のような除外と区別しましょう。何かを足しているのか、対象から外しているのかが判断基準です。
無料40問｜「隣」「ほかに」「的外れ」の使い分け
問1〜25は2択の使い分け、問26〜35は誤文訂正（修正不要の問題も1問）、問36〜40は和文英訳です。各1点・40点満点。解答を隠し、位置か追加かを根拠に選んでください。
第1部｜beside＝物理的な位置（問1〜5）
besideは隣・そばを示す前置詞。一般にnext toで言い換えられます。

すでに挙げたものに追加する場面。besidesの後には名詞句を置けます。

動作を追加する場合は、besides＋動名詞の形。

別の理由や情報を追加する接続副詞。文頭では一般にコンマを置きます。

besideが位置を超え、議論との無関係や感情の高ぶりを表す場合があります。

よくある質問
besideとnext toは同じですか？
物理的な隣の位置では意味が近く、besideはやや改まった響きになることがあります。ただしbeside the pointのような慣用表現はnext toへ言い換えられません。
besidesの後ろに動詞を置けますか？
動作を続ける場合はbesides studyingのように動名詞を置けます。beside studyという形にはしません。
beside the pointは何を意味しますか？
論点・要点と無関係という意味で、「ポイントの隣」と直訳しません。
besidesはexceptと同じですか？
追加と除外という基本的な意味が異なります。参加者や物の集合に新たに加えるのか、除外するのかを確認してください。
