affect・effect・effectiveの違い｜英検・NEW TREASUREの無料40問【全解説】

英語のaffectとeffectは、日本語ではどちらも「影響」と説明されるため、英検の長文やNEW TREASUREなど中高一貫校の英文法で混同しやすい語です。最初に押さえたいのは、affectは主に「〜に影響する」という動詞、effectは主に「影響・結果」という名詞だという違いです。さらにhave an effect on、be affected by、take effect、effectiveなど、前置詞や品詞を正しく選べるかが重要です。慶英会が独自制作した40問・全解答と14日復習を無料公開します。

最初に英文の「空欄の前後」を見る

will (　) our planなら、willの後に動詞原形が必要で、通常affectを選びます。一方have a strong (　) on our planなら、a strongの後に名詞effectが必要です。品詞を先に判断すれば「どちらも影響という意味だから同じ」と誤解せずに済みます。

affect studentsとhave an effect on students

affectは通常、直接目的語studentsを取り、affect studentsと表せます。名詞effectはan effect on studentsのようにonで影響を受ける対象を示します。これをan effect to studentsと機械的に書かないよう注意してください。

be affected byとtake effectはセットで覚える

The festival was affected by the rain.は雨が祭りに影響したという受動態です。これに対してThe new rule will take effect tomorrow.は、規則が明日から効力を持つ意味で、規則が何かに「影響する」と直接述べているわけではありません。動詞の意味と定型表現を区別しましょう。

「affectは必ず動詞、effectは必ず名詞」は絶対規則ではない

高度な英語では、effect meaningful change（意義ある変化を実現する）のようにeffectが動詞になることがあります。また心理学の専門分野ではaffectが名詞になる場合があります。ただし、学校英語や英検の一般的な語法判断では、動詞affect＝影響する、名詞effect＝結果を最初の基準とするのが実用的です。例外は文脈に応じて学びます。

40問の使い方：品詞と前置詞をセットで確認

問1〜25は括弧内の2択から、文の意味と品詞に合うものを選びます。問26〜35は誤文訂正、問36〜40は和文英訳です。解答を見ずに1問1点で採点し、理由も一言で説明してください。

第1部｜affect＝影響を与える動詞（問1〜5）

直後に「何に影響するか」という対象が来る動詞の基本用法。

名詞effectは制度が施行される、薬が効き始めるという定型表現でも使います。

effectiveは形容詞「有効な」。affectedは動詞affectの過去形・過去分詞。
