TOEFL Junior
however、but、instead、ifなどを目印に最終決定と条件を整理します。
could、may、not enough to proveなどの表現を読み落とすと、本文で慎重に述べられた結論を強く言い換えてしまいます。
his classmate、she、they、either memoryが指す人物や情報を取り違えると、その後の段落全体の理解が崩れます。

Original English passage: A science class wanted to investigate whether the amount of light affected the growth of young plants. The students prepared twelve similar plants and divided them into three groups. Each group had four plants. Group A was placed near a bright window, Group B was kept in a room with less light, and Group C was kept in an area with almost no natural light. All plants received the same amount of water every day. After ten days, the students measured each plant. The average heights were 18 centimeters for Group A, 14 centimeters for Group B, and 9 centimeters for Group C. Some students concluded that more light always produces taller plants. However, their teacher pointed out that this was only one short experiment using a small number of plants. Temperature and soil conditions had not been recorded carefully. The class agreed to repeat the experiment, measure other conditions, and use more plants. They also planned to record the color of the leaves, not only the height of the plants. The teacher explained that useful research includes careful observation and a willingness to question early conclusions.

Original English passage: During a local history project, a group of students compared two maps of their town. One map had been drawn about sixty years earlier, and the other had been made recently. The older map showed a narrow road beside a river, while the newer map showed a much wider road in a similar place. A student named Akira suggested that the road had been rebuilt as the town grew. His classmate Mika agreed that this was possible, but she wanted more evidence. Their teacher explained that maps were useful but sometimes contained mistakes or used different methods of measuring distance. The group then found old photographs and interviewed several residents who had lived in the area for many years. One resident remembered that the road was widened after heavy floods damaged a bridge. Another resident remembered only that construction took several months. The students did not treat either memory as a complete record. Instead, they compared both accounts with official documents that described repairs to the bridge. Their final English report explained the changes shown on the maps, offered a possible reason, and noted which details still needed checking. The group learned that asking careful questions is often as important as finding an answer.
問31.What materials did the students compare first? A. Two maps B. Two novels C. Two laboratory plants D. Two textbooks
問32.How old was the older map? A. About six years B. About sixteen years C. About sixty years D. About one hundred years

問34.What did Akira suggest? A. The road had been rebuilt as the town grew B. The map was made in another country C. The bridge had never existed D. The road was closed permanently
問35.Why did Mika want more evidence? A. She refused to read maps B. She knew Akira’s suggestion was impossible C. The suggested explanation was not yet established D. She wanted a new novel
問36.What was one limitation of maps described by the teacher? A. They never show roads B. They may contain errors or use different measurements C. They cannot be compared D. They are always written in English
問37.Which event did one resident associate with the road change? A. A music festival B. Heavy floods damaging a bridge C. A science competition D. A new sports club
問38.What does the phrase ‘either memory’ refer to? A. Both maps B. Both students C. The two residents’ accounts D. The road and river
問39.What did the group compare with official documents? A. Their two interview accounts B. Their math test scores C. The price of textbooks D. A weather forecast
問40.What is the main lesson of the project? A. One witness is always right B. Official documents never have problems C. Careful questions and multiple sources are important D. New maps should never be used
