Read|Paragraph 1
At Harborview School, students prepared a large paper tree for the end-of-term exhibition. Each paper leaf carried a short message about something the writer had learned that year. A bright red ribbon tied around the trunk held several pieces in place and made the display easy to notice. Mika was responsible for taking photographs of the preparation, while Aya helped attach the leaves. On Thursday morning, Mika left the classroom briefly to collect her camera. When she returned, the red ribbon had disappeared from the tree, and Aya was standing beside it. Mika felt disappointed because she had wanted to photograph the completed decoration before visitors arrived. Without asking Aya what had happened, Mika wrote in her notebook that Aya had removed the ribbon because she did not like the design. Mika had observed the missing ribbon, but she had not confirmed Aya’s reason.

Read|Paragraph 2
Aya’s diary described the same morning differently. Before Mika had returned, their teacher had noticed that the blue paint on the paper trunk was still wet. The ribbon touched the fresh paint, and part of its red surface was becoming marked with blue. The teacher asked Aya to remove it temporarily and place it in a labeled envelope until the paint dried. Aya followed the instruction because she wanted the ribbon to remain clean for the exhibition. She left a short note on a noticeboard near the door, but the note was partly covered by a stack of new posters. Aya believed that everyone would understand the ribbon was being protected, not rejected. She did not know that Mika had missed the teacher’s instruction and had not seen the note.

Read|Paragraph 3
At lunchtime, Mika showed her photograph to Ken, another member of the exhibition team. The image showed the tree without its ribbon and Aya beside it, but it did not show the teacher giving an instruction or the envelope in the office. Ken said that the picture could not explain why the ribbon had been moved. Mika realized that she had treated an interpretation as if it were something the camera had proved. She also remembered that Aya had spent many hours arranging the paper leaves and had spoken positively about the design. The suggestion that Aya disliked the display did not fit everything Mika already knew. Instead of accusing her friend, Mika decided to ask the teacher what had happened. Ken encouraged her to read the short note on the noticeboard as well.

Read|Paragraph 4
In the afternoon, the teacher explained her request to Aya and showed Mika the labeled envelope. The ribbon was still inside, clean and ready to be used when the paint had dried. Mika apologized to Aya for writing an unconfirmed explanation of her friend’s actions. Aya said she had expected the noticeboard message to be visible, but she had not checked whether the posters covered it. Both understood that the problem had been caused partly by incomplete communication, not by a disagreement over the design. At two o’clock, they attached the ribbon to the dry trunk together. Mika took a new photograph showing the finished display, and Aya suggested placing a short label beside the tree to explain how the leaves had been created. They decided not to include the earlier misunderstanding in the public exhibition caption.

Read|Paragraph 5
After the exhibition, the class read the two diary entries together. The teacher asked which details were observations, which were assumptions, and which later evidence had clarified the event. Mika’s account accurately described the ribbon being absent when she returned, but it had guessed Aya’s motive. Aya’s account explained the teacher’s instruction and the envelope, but it had assumed that the noticeboard message could be read by everyone. Neither student had deliberately tried to mislead the other. The class agreed that a fair reader should compare sources and ask what each narrator had actually seen. For their next project, the students planned to label temporary changes more clearly and check that messages were visible. The teacher concluded that a story can become more accurate and more interesting when its different viewpoints are examined together.

Paragraph 1
Paragraph 2
Paragraph 3
Paragraph 4
Paragraph 5
