Read|Paragraph 1

At Pinewood School, a third-year English class wanted to improve its vocabulary review routine. Twenty-four students were preparing for a short quiz on twenty new English words. The teacher explained two possible schedules. Under Schedule A, a student would study for ten minutes on each of four days. Under Schedule B, a student would study for forty minutes on a single evening before the first quiz. Both schedules therefore contained forty minutes of planned study time, but the sessions were distributed differently. Twelve students volunteered for A and twelve for B. The teacher warned that this was not a carefully randomized experiment. Students had selected their own schedules, and some might already know several of the words. She asked them to keep a simple study log and record what they actually did, not just what they had intended to do.

Read|Paragraph 2

On the day after the planned study period, the class took its first quiz. The students in Schedule A answered an average of seventeen out of twenty words correctly. The students in Schedule B averaged sixteen correct answers. One student said the difference of one word proved that A was the best possible method. The teacher asked him to look at the data more carefully. These were averages from small groups, not the scores of every student. The two groups might also have differed before they began studying. The teacher did not have a reliable baseline test showing that both groups had started with exactly the same knowledge. She asked the class to report the averages while avoiding a universal claim. A one-word difference was an observation, not by itself an explanation of what caused the result.

Read|Paragraph 3

One week later, students answered the same twenty target words in a new order without looking at their notes. The average for A was fourteen correct, while the average for B was eleven. Both groups had lower averages than on the first quiz. The drop for A was three words, and the drop for B was five words. A student said that the new results showed every learner in A had remembered more words than every learner in B. The teacher corrected this claim because averages did not reveal the full range of individual scores. She also noted that she had not recorded exactly how much additional English practice each student had done during the week. Some may have reviewed the target words again at home. The difference was worth discussing, but the class should not call it definitive proof of cause and effect.

Read|Paragraph 4

After discussing the results, the teacher asked students to write about the review techniques they had used. Several students reported that they had looked at each word and tried to recall its meaning before checking the answer. Others had simply read the word list again and again. These were different learning activities even when they took the same amount of time. The teacher suggested that future logs include the number of self-tests, the dates of review, and whether a student had corrected missed words. A student wanted to create a rule saying that every person must use Schedule A. The teacher replied that the class had not tested every possible schedule or every learner’s needs. She encouraged students to make a realistic personal plan and check whether it helped their own learning.

Read|Paragraph 5

For the class website, the students prepared a table with the two schedules, the planned total study time, the number of students in each group, and the averages from both quizzes. They explained that each group had twelve participants and a planned forty minutes of study. They also identified the limitations: voluntary group selection, unknown starting knowledge, and unmeasured extra practice. Instead of writing that one schedule had been scientifically proved superior, they described the differences observed in their class. The report ended with an invitation for students to review their own missed words after a short delay and check what they could recall without looking. The teacher praised this conclusion because it turned classroom information into a useful habit without claiming more than the records supported.

Paragraph 1

Paragraph 2

Paragraph 3

Paragraph 4

Paragraph 5
