Paragraph 1

At Oak Valley School, the student council received a proposal to play music in one of the common rooms during lunch. Supporters said that cheerful music could help students relax and make lunch feel more enjoyable. Other students worried that they would find it harder to read, think, or speak quietly with friends. The council decided not to treat either group as selfish. Both groups were describing real preferences, and the school had to consider how a shared space could serve different needs. Before making a recommendation, the council asked the teachers whether the room was needed for another activity at lunchtime. It also prepared a short anonymous survey. The purpose was to understand the choices students wanted, not to force everyone to prefer the same atmosphere.

Paragraph 2

Twenty students replied to the survey. Twelve said they would enjoy having music available during lunch, five preferred a quiet room, and three had not made up their minds. A member of the council reported that sixty percent of the respondents supported music. This was a correct description of the twelve out of twenty responses, but the teacher warned that the survey was small. It would be inaccurate to claim that sixty percent of every student in the school supported the plan. The council also asked whether the five students who preferred silence should be described as opposing music everywhere. Their written comments showed that several simply wanted one room where music was not played. The committee therefore separated support for an option from opposition to every other option.

Paragraph 3

The council proposed a two-week trial in which music would be played at a moderate volume in one room, while a nearby room would remain quiet. The teachers approved the trial but asked the council to check whether sound traveled through the connecting doorway. During the first three days, some students in the quiet room reported that they could still hear the music clearly. One supporter argued that the music was not very loud in the room where it was played. The teacher replied that the important question for the quiet room was what people heard there, not what the players intended. The council closed the connecting door and moved one speaker farther from it. These adjustments reduced the problem but did not guarantee that every visitor would be satisfied.

Paragraph 4

During the second week, volunteers asked students in both rooms to describe their experience. They did not use a single question such as, ‘Did you like our successful music trial?’ because that wording might suggest the expected answer. Instead, they asked whether the space had been useful for the activity each student had chosen. Students in the music room often said they enjoyed the atmosphere. Several students in the quiet room reported that reading had become easier after the door was closed. However, one student still preferred to spend lunch outdoors, and another said that the trial had made little difference. The council recorded these comments without changing them into simple yes-or-no votes. It wanted to understand which conditions worked for whom.

Paragraph 5

At the final meeting, the council recommended keeping a music room and a quiet room during lunch when both spaces were available. It also suggested reviewing the arrangement if the rooms were needed for lessons or other events. The students did not claim that the trial had proved the plan would work perfectly every day. Their observations covered only two weeks, and the number of visitors had varied. A member said that the debate had changed his view of fairness. At first, he had thought fairness meant choosing the option supported by the largest number of people. He now understood that a shared school could sometimes offer different spaces instead of making everyone follow one preference. The teacher praised the report for explaining the limits of its evidence and respecting students who had different needs.

Paragraph 1

Paragraph 2

Paragraph 3

Paragraph 4

Paragraph 5
