Read|Paragraph 1
At Greenfield School, the science club studied how students read weather forecasts in English. The teacher prepared a fictional five-day forecast for the town, covering Monday through Friday. Each day’s number described the forecast probability of measurable rain at the town during the stated day. The probabilities were twenty percent for Monday, eighty for Tuesday, fifty for Wednesday, thirty for Thursday, and seventy for Friday. Before looking at observations, the teacher asked what an eighty-percent chance meant. One student said it guaranteed rain during eighty percent of Tuesday’s hours. The teacher explained that the forecast probability was not a statement about the fraction of the day that would be rainy. It also did not specify how many millimeters of water would fall if rain occurred. The class agreed to keep probability, duration, and amount in separate columns.

After the week, the students compared the predictions with a rain gauge in the school garden. The gauge showed no measurable rain on Monday, six millimeters on Tuesday, none on Wednesday, none on Thursday, and eleven millimeters on Friday. Therefore, the school had recorded measurable rain on two of the five days. A student said that the forecast had promised rain on three days because Wednesday’s probability had been fifty percent. The teacher reminded him that a probability did not guarantee a particular daily outcome. The class could say that rain had been recorded at the school on Tuesday and Friday, but it could not use these observations alone to describe rainfall in every part of the town. The forecast applied to a wider area than the single school garden where their instrument stood.

Read|Paragraph 3
The club then added the rainfall amounts recorded at the school. Six plus eleven gave seventeen millimeters during the five-day period. The teacher warned them that this amount was not the same as the sum or average of the probability percentages. Percentages described forecasts of whether rain might occur, while millimeters described the quantity actually collected by the gauge. A student calculated that the school had received seventeen percent of the forecast. The teacher rejected that calculation because it mixed incompatible units. The class also discussed whether an eighty-percent forecast should be considered wrong when rain did not occur. For an individual forecast, an unlikely outcome can still happen; judging forecast quality would require many comparable predictions and a clear method, not a single event.

The students also examined the meaning of the observation period. The forecast covered the stated day for the town, but the school gauge had been read in the afternoon, and its recorded figures came from the staff’s daily log. The teacher asked the class to check that the measuring intervals matched before calling the figures directly comparable. If the rain gauge had been emptied at a different time from the stated forecast period, the reported millimeters might not describe precisely the same hours. The club did not have a detailed hourly record for the week. It therefore kept its comparison at the level of a basic classroom example rather than claiming that it had fully tested the forecasting service. Another student proposed recording start and end times more carefully in a later project.

Read|Paragraph 5
For the final class poster, the students created one table for forecast probabilities and a second for observed rainfall amounts. They wrote the source and date of each number and noted that the forecast covered the town while the gauge stood in the school garden. The class stated that two school observation days had measurable rain and that the total recorded amount was seventeen millimeters. It did not claim that an eighty-percent chance meant a fixed period of rain or a fixed amount of water. Nor did it describe five days of data as enough to prove a weather forecast generally reliable or unreliable. The teacher praised the students for keeping predictions, observations, and conclusions separate. Good English reading, she said, often depends on understanding what a number measures before deciding what it means.

Paragraph 1
Paragraph 2
Paragraph 3
Paragraph 4
Paragraph 5
